Evening folks,

I'm having a stupid amount of trouble trying to get our damn cat to use the cat flap. At the moment it will sit and meow by the patio window / back door waiting for someone to let it out.

I've tried sitting and holding the cat flap open, and it will very slowly stick it's head out and go. But if I try to slowly let it go while its half way through (to show it that it will move if pushed) it just gives up and comes back in!!

It's one of those magnet operated flaps, but I know that the collar is working correctly as I have tried it myself.

It's driving me up the wall! anyone have any ideas?

Lol :p

My cat was the same m8, best just leave it and he will figure it out

You can fit through a cat flap ;)

On a serious note, with our cats we just force them through the cat flap and eventually they learnt.

You need to stop letting it in when it meows. It will know it can come in through the flap - just doesn't want to for some reason. Don't feed it for a day, then leave a bowl of food on the inside of the flap. Show it to the cat, then put it outside. Don't let it in, no matter how much noise it makes. Eventually it will use the flap.

Time. It should master it, both of ours did given time.
I find kicking them out and then putting a bowl of the food they like best inside is a good motivator!

Leave the cat outside and it's food inside! That worked a treat for us, except for the fact that Parker invited his mates around to claw our settee! :p

My wife had to wave a piece of ham through the catflap to make our cat use it....:D Luckily before the ham ran out the cat got the idea....;)

Our 2 kittens learned how to use it in about 2 minutes! We just kind of held them and put them through the flap. We NEVER held it open for them as we didn't want them to think that's what had to happen. Just get them and push them through it so they will learn.

We had one of those magnetic ones, but the cat used to come back with spoons, nails and all sorts stuck round his neck :(

Seriously? Just roffled!

LOL. Yeah seriously. This thread will be probably way forgotton about by the time I find it, but I've a picture of him looking through the catflap with a spoon like a huge shiny bow-tie stopping him from coming through.

Didn't realise just how powerful the magnets were.

Had this scenario a few times with our cats, we'v e moved house a few times and getting them used to a new cat flap is pretty much standard procedure now.

I'm assuming its a staywell one ?

Get a length of tape to prop the door open half way - so the cat can see through. Eventually curiosity will get the better and it will poke its head through. As soon as the cat realises it can pass through the door easily you can shut the flap completely. Best to put a small piece of tape over the locking tab at the bottom whilst they get used to pushing the flap open too

:)
