Well, well, well. Radiohead, err Jonny more like it, announced that a new Radiohead album will be released on October 10th. Yes, you read it correctly. October 10th. That is next week.

It will be called In Rainbows and the way it will be released is quite interesting. First off, it will only be available on www.inrainbows.com initially. Secondly, it appears that they are releasing this album without a signed deal with a record company. Of course, many of us have been saying for years that they don't need EMI or any label.

If you go to the site now, you'll notice that there are two options for pre-ordering: Discbox and Download.

What is the difference?

DISCBOX

THIS CONSISTS OF THE NEW ALBUM, IN RAINBOWS, ON CD AND ON 2 X 12 INCH HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL RECORDS. A SECOND, ENHANCED CD CONTAINS MORE NEW SONGS, ALONG WITH DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND ARTWORK. THE DISCBOX ALSO INCLUDES ARTWORK AND LYRIC BOOKLETS. ALL ARE ENCASED IN A HARDBACK BOOK AND SLIPCASE.

THE ALBUM DOWNLOAD AUTOMATICALLY COMES WITH THIS PACK. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE FILE DIGITALLY FROM THE 10TH OCTOBER 2007.

DISCBOXES ARE BEING MADE TO ORDER AND ARE PRICED AT £40.00 INCLUDING POSTAGE. SHIPPING WILL BEGIN ON OR BEFORE 3RD DECEMBER 2007.

If you don't want to pay for all the extra stuff, you can simply download the songs on October 10th. How much does it cost? YOU DECIDE. Radiohead is letting you choose how much to pay. No really, it's up to you.

Wow, what a good idea... I've been waiting for bands to start doing this. I know some authors that do a similar thing, and was wondering which mainstream band would be the first to do it.

I'm sure some people will take the mickey and pay only a few pence, but sensible people will pay what, in their opinion, it's genuinely worth.

Good on 'em, I say :)

Awesome.

I'm not really THAT fond of Radiohead's stuff, there's no denying how awesome some of it is though. But I have to find out which tune it was that I heard them recording. ;) :D

Just pre-ordered the £40 discbox (you get the download with it) :D

EDIT: Wish they put Lift in there :(

I was just reading about this on Digg - really impressed!

Now I am interested in seeing what people are willing to pay!

For a digital download - I will say £5-6 personally, as you don't get any physical media and it is compressed.

How about the rest of you?

Fantastic!

I'd love to pay around a tenner for it, however I can't afford that atm as I've been messed around for almost 5 weeks with my new job and have run out of cash.

So what I'll do is buy it for a quid then when I can afford it buy it agan for a much more deserving price.

I like to try before I buy anyway. I'll pay 10p for the privilege of listening, and if I like it, I'll pay a reasonable amount for it considering it's a download and not a CD.

Either way, it's a terrific idea.

This is a great move, I'm not a huge Radiohead fan although I do love some of their stuff. I think it would be interesting to see how many people pay a reasonable amount, I think I'm going to go for £3, I don't think a download is worth the same as a CD so it seems fair to me.

I don't want to take the **** and offer pence because I want this idea to take off, other bands will not follow suit if it proves to be a flop financially (although I can't really see that happening even if people do pay 5p tbh).

It won't because people are jerks

Maybe, but at least I won't be one of them :)

How much do artists generally get per CD if they use a record label?

I really want the CD but not for £40.

About £1 if memory serves me but then that was years ago and I would imagine that a CD will eventually be released, even if they still do it under their own steam.
