Lovely Wolver-ampton!
In the market for a new winter jacket. Have been offered a North Face Talkeetna Triclimate for £99 (RRP about 170). Will be replacing an Alpha Industries Parka and a Helly Hanson waterproof (It's grey, and I've had it for years - it's not chavvy colours, just grey).

Don't really know much about the HyVent fabric the jacket is made of. My Helly jacket has lasted a good 3 years and never let me down. Was just wondering how this HyVent stuff compares. I don't have a car and spend a lot of time outdoors, so waterproof and breathability is essential to me.

Any TNF wearers here care to comment on their jackets and the kind of wear they get from them?

Thanks

I wear a Canada Goose 'Chilliwack' parka :o

Really nice down lining, feels like I'm wearing a duvet. Far too warm at this time of year though.

This is my winter coat [without cross detail].

Though I imagine it's not to everyone's taste here.... very well made though.

Hmm, I'm in the market for a nice smart winter's coat actually. This could be a useful thread.

I want a coat that can be worn with formal dress (college dinners etc), but isn't overly smart so I can wear it at other times.

OMG... A quick Google on that one turns up a coat that costs £400!!! Is that right?

Anyway, I have an alpha parka which is fine, just not waterproof (though I am putting the shell through the wash as we speak with some Nikwax wash in stuff just to give it a bit of water repellency).

I think for something like this you could get a nice double or single breasted [which would be better] full length or three-quarter length wool coat. I used to wear those years ago and they're perfect for formal wear or going out more casually. You can pick up a decent one for about £150-£200.

Any examples you could link too Ly?

I've been having real trouble finding one that will go with my dinner suit, and also a pair of jeans..now it's possible such a coat doesn't exist, but it'd be nice if I could find one ;)

Money isn't the issue, it's just finding one that looks good, whilst working in more then one situation! I'm not a girl, so don't want 37 different things for every occasion.

Can't put a price on a good coat.

Well, you can..

LOL!

Well, if I lived in the extremes of Alaska, that might do me... But the extremes of Wolverhampton do not require such insulation...

Perhaps a stab-vest!

They should be about $400... which is more reasonable. In any case, the Canada Goose jackets are used by the US in antarctica etc. If you ever watch any films or programmes where they're in the arctic or antarctic, you'll notice guys wearing them (The Day After Tomorrow in particular etc).

I have a Canada goose one but it isnt the chilliwack one I think its the resolute one, will check next time I'm home, far too warm for UK use.

I've had a normal Talkeetna jacket for nearly 2 years and it has been alright. Waterproofing has been fine but the cut of the jacket is too short so all the water runs onto my trousers. Expect the parka will be better in that respect. It went all soggy when I took it off wet and dumped it in a pile on the floor though. I gave it a wash with some nikwax after that and seems to be back to normal.

I sweat in all breathable fabrics, even my Montane Featherlite smock so don't really know how breathable it is. I do get rather warm in it unless it's very cold out. Thinking about getting a new jacket that isn't as bulky as the Talkeetna jacket so it's easier to carry around in a bag. I only use the Montane smock for cycling as it looks way too nerdy and isn't very waterproof.

Think it'd be good value for £100 anyway.

Up until January I tend to wear just a t-shirt underneath.

When it gets to freezing or around say 3-4 degrees, I will usually put on a jumper.

I wear a t shirt up until january then might look at putting a jumper on if it snows.

I don't really feel the cold much.

No really, you can't. A good fitting coat that looks good and fits most situations is a godsend.

Zara have some decent overcoats starting from about £100 or so I think. I ended up getting a Paul Smith overcoat last christmas, but I got it in the sales so it was only £250, looks great with a suit or casualwear imo.

I wear a few different one, ones a Berghaus jacket, which is very nice when its cold.

The other is one from New Zealand, a mountain sort of jacket, nice looking though.

Funny you should mention the other Talkeetna (the hooded shell type one I think you mean?) As that was what I was originally looking at for £105 but saw some reviews that also mentioned the dripping.

I think the Parka is excellent for £99 and that's with DHL delivery too.

Looks like I'm sold.

Many thanks
