hey guys, i was given a laptop from my place of work last year and i'm now looking to sell it, it has company branding on the lid, i looked into buying a new lid but resellers want £60 + VAT

so just wondered what results people have had in regards to spraying and what type of paint and preperation is needed for for the spray to take?

Vynil dye should do it. Its proper spray paint made for plastic which means you dont have to sand anything, all you have to do is make sure the surface is clean and free of glue/grease/dirt.

i see, the lid is silver and if i wanted to go black for example is it a case of spraying a few times? can ask where is the best place to obtain this on the high street?

Hmmm its silver... You can get this stuff in any colour imaginable so if you were stuck and had to choose silver again it would be ok. As for spraying black I dont see why it wont work. Havent used this vynil dye for ages but most car shops should sell it. Its used by people who modify their cars by spraying the dashboard and associated trim. Im sure halfords even stock it but under a different name... plasticoat I think?

Back when pc modding was big, people had excellent results spraying cd drive bezels. I did some and also did a few mice with the stuff and I was really happy with how it came out because you dont have to sand anything you dont loose the original texture of the surface.

i see, yeah the case is made from the same sort of stuff as the cd bezels, i will have to check halfords out then, unless anyone knows any other brands that they have used?

I would not advise any kind of rattle cans for anything that is constantly goign to be touched.

You need to clear coat it in a catylised laquer i.e 2 pack ( what cars are painted in... real cars, not bumpers on novas lol )

With something that is going to be touched as much as a laptop, every time you grab it to pull it out of a bag, the paint will eventualy just turn into a sticky mess. This is because tha paint 'dries' iot doesnt 'harden' like a 2pack will.

I would check that you can get a spare lid before you do this :)

*edit* Is this by any chance from acompany with a name like, candy ****, edinburgh ****, ****y balboa ?
you can get replacement lids for less than £60!

no it has my company local on there, so i need to paint it, not really wanting to spend £60 as plan on selling to a friend cheap for around £100.

so what can you tell me about this 2 pack catylised laquer - i have not heard of that :(

yeah sorry it was kinda of rude of me to jump in like that... if your willing to spend the time and effort to learn how to paint it nice and pro for your friend then thats cool, you don;t need someone jumping in and being a **** :)

na i did not mean it like mate, yeah would like to give it ago it's pretty beat up on the front yet the laptop under the lid is mint and a good spec
