~£1000 Gaming PC Spec Check!

i did!, but got to say that other than 1 minor issue ive had no problems with vista, so in my opinion its the better os to go for, also having a dx10 card and winxp32 means upgrading again in the near future otherwise may as well get a cheaper dx9

Why when 8800 is faster then any dx9 card on the market? Better OS? maybe, but not for gaming, at all.... period

yes it is, no speed issues here, in fact games are running smoother when multi tasking.

as long as it's plugged into the internet to download drivers and patches, it's fine for gaming and xp is a waste of money.

which are all using old drivers.
There's been a number of vista and driver updates. the 2 are now pretty much identical. However xp will not get any better, where vista will.

Even in those old tests your talking 2 or so frames. Is that really worth spending money and buying 2 OS.

Yes I suppose I see where your coming from but not all games run in Vista though, and some are not supported any more and so will not run in Vista as there will be no patches.

Also why are Microsoft extending support on their OS?

As many don't wont to upgrade, but if your buying a new OS, then get vista 64.

Very few games don't run in vista, as it has a very good 32bit emulator. Some have problems which can be fixed, usually to do with administration rights. There's a way of getting the full admin account to solve those problems.

I'm the friend that had problems with wireless and Vista 64bit. The problem is a lag spike every 60sec when gaming caused by the wireless zero config service looking for a faster network every 60 seconds.

In xp you simply disable the service and run your wireless card with its own utility. The issue with vista is that if you disable the service wireless doesn't work at all.

Im back on XP Pro.

Just ordered now - thanks for all your help.

I selected next day delivery so hopefully it should be arriving tomorrow. I've never used citylink before; given that the order was completed just after 4pm, is it still likely that it will get delivered at some point tomorrow? I wanted to order earlier this morning but I've had loads of problems with that blasted Visa Verification 'service'. Tomorrow is the only day I can arrange to be around to receive it, but if it isn't likely to turn up I could at least make some time on Thursday morning by getting things out of the way tomorrow instead. I'm sure this is different every time, but what tends to be the norm with OC and Citylink in this kind of situation?

hmm... I dont know... I can remember Gibbo saying that anything that is ordered before 12 will get delivered next day, I'm not 100% sure, but I have no problem with CityLink

Thanks,

I guess I'll just have to hang around all day anyway on the off chance. My order status has been on "Security Validation" for an hour now. I guess this must be normal, but given the problems I've had with the whole visa verification today, I'm feeling decidedly pessimistic. I'm having to get the whole lot delivered to an address different to my billing address, so perhaps that's thrown a spanner into the works as well. I hope that the process of building the damn thing won't be plagued by as many problems...

For those of you who are considering similar components, and to bring the thread a more satisfying close, here's how mine has turned out:

looks very nice, looking at getting a very similar rig myself in a week or two when i finally get my deposit check for my old house back (bloody royal mail)

anyway what os did you finally go for vista 32 or 64?

Not yet, I'm going to have a look at pushing it sometime this week.

To give you some indication though:

All of the Windows Vista Experience Index scores are 5.9 with the exception of the hdd which scores 5.7.

I ran a 3dmark06 test last night and, with absolutely no overclocking at all, it scored 10588.

With the cpu cooler and top exhaust fans all on low, the cpu temp is 33 idle and between 39 and 42 under load. It was much lower (~29 idle if I remember rightly) with all the fans on high, but I didn't really want the extra noise.

edit: I went for vista home premium 64 in the end. The only problem I've had is that my webcam isnt supported. Aside from that, its very stable and has been a joy to use.
