A la.

These have recently popped onto my radar as something I 'might consider' for my next car......

Anyone have any pointers or tips on what to look for? I'm mostly interested in living with one for a bit to see what the powertrain is like, so I'd not be fussed if it was an auto - I hear they're pretty tough.

There appears to be single turbo variants as well - any pros/cons to this configuration?

I've really never looked at these in depth - so not quite up to speed on them.

Cheers peeps :)

Either that or a Soarer.........

If it was me id get a nice manual non turbo and turbo it if u want the power. So many are auto turbos and your far better off getting a manual even if it means not having the blowers. The turbos on them arnt great (not much lag, but not much boost as they both small). Just make sure u get a nice manual, worry about power and turbos after. You can get a nice turbo kit for 2-3k anyway

Supra anyday... I have driven (briefly) the N/A 3ltr, TT Auto and Targatop N/A manual.

The Auto is very fun to drive and really opens up when you boot it. I nearly did something in my pants everytime i changed gear because of the *whistles* it made... Corrrr blimey! There are a lot of ruff ones about though, took my cousin a fair bit of searching for the TT in a good state. The targa are pretty dam rare too.

If only I could get insurance on one of these! :D

Perfect choice would be a Manual TT with targa top... but that aint gonna happen!

Sidenote - The last one I drove was running 285's for tires, thats so wide!

It seems that the NA ones make 220hp, the twins making 276bhp and the exports (i.e. us?) 320hp.

The NA 6 doesn't actually sound too unreasonable. It strikes me as a little odd though, having a Supra without a sodding gert turbine wheel (or two) nailed on the side! Barring the obvious, do the engines differ in their internals any way?

Any single turbo supra is an aftermarket conversion done by the owner. I think you can get bigger HP from the single turbo conversions.

Did you sell the vette? I watched your auction, (well written btw) but noticed it didn't meet the reserve.

I belive there is more to it than its the turbo one minus the turbos, I hear its popular to get the NA then supercharge it

Yea Flat-6, sold it outside of auction to an Italian gentleman for a very acceptable price ;) :D

He's flying over, picking it up and driving the 1700kms back! :o

His name's Enzo though, so doesn't quite fit with the car!

I personally wouldnt touch the NA one unless you're going to mod it with turbos yourself. A friend of mine had an NA one and it was dead slow when considering the weight it lugs around.

Are you for real? Point taken about the manual box but do you really want a huge heavy car like that without the turbo power? This is never going to be a nimble little sports car. It's a monster power car and surely you don't want it to be anything else?

Lovely cars! A Supra TT is what I will be after in a year or two.

Have a look on the Supra Mk IV forums as there is a lot of info to be found. Also worth noting is that the UK spec TT can be insured for substantially less than the JDM imports, they also have a better spec.

Just a small note, you cant put turbos on the N/A because the internals arnt strong enough. The twin turbos models can be upgraded to the big power single turbos.

Although there are many BPU mods for N/A supras, have a look at these sites to get a more indepth look.

You can put turbos on the NA the engine internals are exactly the same the TT is just set up for lower compression. You can get the same effect on the NA sticking in a thicker head gasket.

The weak point on the NA however is the gearbox the auto and manual NA box's won't take much more that 300 whp (not for long anyway). The NA's also tend to be lower spec'd as well. It will cost 5-6k to do a proper NA - TT conversion so its not really worth it considerng you can pick up nice TT for 7k nowdays

As for modding the NA don't bother theres not much you can do to extract much more power a decat and some headers and a SAFC will see around 250bhp but that will cost you about 1.5k not worth it.

However don't rule out the NA its not exactly slow, handles far better than most people give it credit for and is cheap to run* (touch wood nothing has gone wrong in mine in 2.5 years and I could still sell it for what I paid for it). But if you can't live without the extra power go for the TT you won't regret it

*compared to the TT and similar cars not a 1.1 shedbox

I used to own a 94 TT auto, one of the best cars I have ever had!
Deffantly go for the twin turbo, after a week of the N/A you'll be wishing you had. Turbo power delivery is excellent only a little lag around 40mph the rest is all good, ready to go soon as you put your foot down so dont listen to any-one that says otherwise, and the 40mph lagg I think was perhaps down to the 4 speed auto box I doubt you would have the same problem with the manual. Though dont let me put you off the auto, gear changes are very quick (quicker than you'll ever get with a clutch and stick) and from a standing start you can't go wrong, a little foot on brake-en-go and your off in blistering times. Go for the import RZ/GZ etc only problem is you'll be limited to 112mph (which can be corrected for around £50). BPH for both UK and import spec are around 310/320 with the same lbft.
Test drive a couple before you buy, leather seats are also a lot nicer than cloth which you'll get with the higher spec.
Let me know how the hunting goes.
Heres a pic of my old beauty.......

Saw the supra owners club day at santa pod this day when we were setting up for central RS day. Even the ones claiming huge power were not actually all that quick. Nice looking cars, but I always think a supra owner can't afford a skyline........
