Hi everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster. :)

I just ordered a "OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3" but since I'm a total newbie regarding hardware I'm a little lost right now. Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is my current system:

CPU: 2,00 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX
Motherboard: ASUSTeK A8N32-SLI-Deluxe
Memory: 3gig
Monitor: HP L2335 (23' widescreen)

I already ordered the 8800 but I'm not sure if I should upgrade anything else.

Should I get another CPU as well? Like a better dual core?
Will the card bottleneck in my current system?
Any particular reason to get a quad processor at the moment, and would I need a new motherboard for it?

Sorry for all these questions, but like I said... I'm a little lost with all this. :(

Thanks in advance!

your current setup seems to be fine and the gtx will make big difference over your old card.
new cpu would be good but its not necessary.
also what power supply do you have?
as long as the psu is up to the job you will be happy.

Thanks for the quick reply Cyber-Mav. :)

I'm not sure what my power supply is since I bought it like 2 years ago, but at the time it was kind of an overkill buy (I had lots of problems with others prior to that, so I decided not to save money on it). It's a huge metal box that should have enough power to light up a small town, so I'm fine I guess. :D

I also forgot to mention I'm on a Vista setup and the whole point of the upgrade is to play Quake Wars, Crysis, Unreal Tournament 3, Hellgate London, etc @ 1920x1200 with as much eye candy as possible. :P

From what I gather then, a new dual core won't make that much of a difference? And I'd need a new motherboard for a quad, right?

Big thanks again for the help. :)

I suggest at least a DECENT (this is the operative word) 550W PSU for an 8800GTX, preferably with 2 6 pin PCI-E connectors, though these can be augmented using 2 molex's if the PSU definately has enough power.

considering what Far Cry was like when it came out, no-one will be able to play Crysis at full everything with all the eye candy for 2 years after it comes out.

Is there anything out there yet which can play Far Cry at 1900 x1200 with max full eye candy, hdr at 60 fps? And that is almost 4 years later.

Very good choice of card :) You won't be disappointed with the performance, that's for sure. Installation should be a doddle, just download the latest drivers from Nvidia website to use, instead of the ones supplied on the CD that comes with the card.

have you checked that the card will fit in your case?

That's one of my main concerns as well. I'm hoping it's not bigger than the 7800 or else I'll need a new case as well. :(

@ Aod: Yeah, I know, hence the "as possible". :D
@ manic_man: Thanks for the advice, mate.
@ Scougar: Thanks!

So, I take it everyone agrees that a new CPU isn't needed?

PS: Thanks a lot for the help everyone. :)

If u feel like the CPU is bottlenecking your games, give it a quick overclock, like FSB up 10-15 mhz and see if that makes the game run faster, if it does then u'll prob need a new cpu or a good cooler and clock it a bit more....

Why buy a new cpu when u can buy a good cooler for less and overclock the chip !??

if u need a new psu look no further than corsair also the 8800 get a nice boost now with latest drivers and rivatuner allowing you to custom overclock the shaders i would siggest you either overclock the cpu or look into quad core.

I'm Similar to Mookambo, in that I have a Single Core (Athlon FX-55/2 Gig Ram, 600 watt seasonic PSU, 250 HD 16 meg Buffer/ ATI X850 GFX Card), and have been deliberating for a long while now, as to wether my CPU will be the bottleneck, as I want a OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 too. My CPU is 2.6ghz, but it won't overclock (system crashes), will it be good enough for the "High-end" games" in the future (Crysis/Dirt/Call of Juarez etc?), I am on Windows Vista, and have a nice new Samsung 226bw (good these are!) I was going to order a CPU/RAM/MOBO bundle from ocUk, but do i NEED one?

What CPU is that one Mookambo? 2.0, 4200?

I'm not sure, all the info I have on it is: "2,00 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core". I'm about as ignorant as it gets regarding hardware.

@ Rofflay: Thanks.

@ Loadsamoney and joe pineapples: Thanks, seems like I need a bigger case as well.

@ cooljimy84 and Serpico: Thanks for the advice and the link. I didn't even think about overclocking it because I've never done anything like that before. Might be a good option. :)

Just read the stickys at the top of the page, it's just a bit of a learning curve and after that it's just a hobbie, or a passion..... :D

Thanks, I will, cooljim. :)

By the way, should I be worried that my 8800 is still in the "warehouse queue" after a whole week? I want it baaaaaad! :D

GTX is about 10/10.5 inches long.

27.5cm, i make that 11 inches :)

Also, a huge metal box that can power a small city that was rather popular 2 years ago, was the hyper type-r 580w.... which, a lot have, recently been going bang... really would help if you found out what psu you are running dude...

On the "should i upgrade anything else" note. I personally choose to upgrade my whole system but this is down to my personal circumstances (UK based for 18 months then away for 8 months) and that i can afford it (8 months not being able to spend a £ is nice). This way i find i can put together a ballanced system without any major bottle-necking.
Ive had;
Athlon 1600+/GForce 3ti200 (ti 4200 for a bit)
AMD 2500 Mobile/9800 Pro
SD3700/7800 Gtx
C2D/8800Gtx
And obviosly clocked all of the above as much as Pos.
Im off again earlyish next year so my current rig will do till im back this time next year and then its decision time again.
