this is my spec

AMD X2 5600+
8600GTS
2GB DDR2 667MHZ
ASUS MV2 MOTHERBOARD
400w psu

well the 5600+ is at 2.8ghz thats what it comes at im new to the field of overclocking so im only looking for a small overclock 200mhz just get it too 3ghz and i dont really want to damage my parts =)

i know that amds overclock nowhere near as good as intels core 2 duo but im only wanting a very small overclock just too get it too 3ghz then i will be happy :)

is overclocking done through software or do i have to start messing around inside the computer if its the latter then i will just give it a miss.

thanks for any help

You usually tweak your speeds in the BIOS of your motherboard. Restart, go into your BIOS and find the pages that talk about multipliers, FSB speeds, and voltages (CPU voltage, or Vcore is what you might see. I think stock Vcore for this chip is 1.4V).
Your X2 5600 has a multiplier locked at a max of 14x. Basically put, this means it will take your memory speed and multiply it by 14 to get it's clock speed, although you can lower your multiplier and increase your FSB to get better performance if you have decent memory, which you do.
People have hit 3.2GHz and higher by lowering the multiplier and increasing the FSB and tweaking the Vcore higher if unstable, but if you only want 3GHz (maybe to start with?), you can use stock voltages, leave your multiplier at 14 and edge your FSB up to 215MHz. To get any higher, dropping your multiplier to 10x and putting your FSB up to 320MHz can be done. Your memory should be able to handle those speeds, but dropping your multiplier to 10x means you won't need to increase the voltage to it much.

so i could just put my FSB upto 215mhz and not change anything else and i should be fine?

sorry for all the questions i just really dont want to damage my system

sorry to jump in middle..but is there any step by step tutorials for overclocking....anywhere in this forum..or internet

Thankz

An example:
I have the 2.6GHz 5200+ on an Abit KN9 Ultra with 2 gig of Crucial Ballistix PC6400 ram.
I set the CPU ext clock from 200 to 216.
I left the multi at default(for this cpu) x13.
I set the Ht to 4(but it behaves at 5).
Result = 2.8GHZ(stock is 2.6)
Ram is set to 4-4-4-12 2T
I have not changed any voltages.
On those setting it is rock solid.

You ain't even trying :p

I have my 4200+ dual running at 3.24 Ghz and that is with only an extra 0.25 volts over standard.

HT set at 3
Ram set at 2.5-3-3-7 1T
Only down side is ram set at 166/200 so only as per my sig.

Come on guys, read the overlocking guides and get into the groove.;)

Don't "need"to try.
It's good enough for what I want.
I only overclocked it to get the ram running at what it was meant to run at and not what it will run at (less than)on default x13 and cpu at 200.
If that cpu ran at x14 and ext clock at 200 then it would have been no need to overclock.
