putting dvd's onto hdd?

Got a friend who wants to put a few DVD films onto his laptop for when he goes on holiday, can anyone tell me how to go about putting the films onto the hard drive.

Is it as simple as copying the dvd files to the hdd and then downloading a codec or what ever to play the files?

Any advice or links would be good.

Your probably better off ripping the DVD's to mpg format. Try using Handbrake.

I've used it in the past and it works quite well.

Just downloaded that and kept getting error messages saying something about copyright etc

clonedvd get the free trial, which is the full version just 25 day license.

slysoft programs let you do this, but it's illegal to use them on copyright films

I think I might just tell him it's better to just take the DVD's with him, as some are copyright protected and the other thing is it takes too long to convert the files.

Rip then to your HDD with DVD Decrypter

Then convert them into AVIs (xvid) using Auto Gordian Knot

Then make sure you have the like of FFDShow to play them...

Handbrake is pretty good.
