Ok, so its not a soundcard issue. (Searching round the internet, had quite a few results come up with the same error your getting and relating to a soundcard issue but since your using onboard sound it cant be that).

How's your Memory, what sort of results did you get back from Memtest?

At stock 3-3-3-12 10 passes over 6 hours no errors.

I know this was posted a fair while ago now, but i've just had two Error 124s playing COD4. Monitored the all temps and everything is fine, memtest is also fine.

Using latest Vista 64 WHQL drivers, 8800GT.

Anyone shed anymore light on this with a few more months wisdom?

That's the BSOD I got when installing games (reading from the DVD caused it). I contacted Microsoft tech support (free with SP1 even with the OEM version of Vista) and was told it would be because of a rogue driver. I had already figured out a temp solution though which was to disable DMA on the DVD drive. I don't use Vista anymore now so I didn't go through the procedure to help figure out which driver was causing the issue.

I suggest you contact Microsoft tech support and someone will email you with instructions on how you can help to figure out which driver is causing the issue and they'll be able to help sort out it out from there.

EDIT: Here is the Vista SP1 support link:
