After so many rumors floating abound that the masterminds behind the record breaking Halo franchise would leave Microsoft, an explanation about how exactly this could've happened has surfaced on the net:
Gameinformer Reports:

"Our source stated that Bungie is “tired of Making Halo, and didn’t want to do future Halo games.” For an unstated, but significant amount of money, Bungie shareholders bought the studio name back from Microsoft. Our source also revealed that even though Microsoft will retain the rights to Halo, Microsoft also has “the right of first refusal on future games.” This means that Microsoft has the first shot at publishing Bungie’s future titles. How this will come into play if Bungie decides they want future game X to appear on the PlayStation 3 and Wii alongside an Xbox 360 release will make things quite interesting."

Very strange with this (if true) and Bizzare being bought up by Activision wonder whats up with game studios that are not in trouble and having successful games making money for them?

They do need to diversify. Imagine what bungie could do if they could create a new IP in a new universe with new ideas!

rumour, says it all and apparently no one owns Bungie stock. Bungie has no seperate board of directors, CEO or anything else an independent company has, Bungie is a development studio within Microsoft Corporation.

So AT BEST, MS may spin off Bungie into a seperate company which they will still own a controlling interest in, but that hasn't happened yet, as the law requires an SEC filing and that info passed on to MS shareholders for them to vote on first.

I just cant see what either Microsoft or Bungie would gain from this, Microsoft own the Halo franchise as far as i know, unless bungie want to make a new version of ONI :D

"Apparently MS just wants Bungie to make Halo for the rest of their natural days, and Bungie doesn't like how MS is constantly trying to "handle" everything they do; the way they market their games, the way they interact with their fans (basically the fact that they do appreciate their fans), and how stingie they are with the profits (comparable to the rest of the industry). So as of today they are their own independent entity.

That's from inquirer link, sounds about right.

yes i heard this too from a few friends in the industry today. I think bungie and MS will still work together in future but unlike up until now they have been and MS exclusive company.

So watch this spce for new IP and cross-console titles.

Looking at the press and the money Halo 3 made I doubt HALO 4 will be far off maybe on the next MS console, mega money is to be made.

Ahhh cmon, that doesnt make sense....

Halo 3 made $170 million in its 1st day! Why break from that winning formula of ultimate £$£$£$£$£$. Basically they are saying that they dont want to make a game that could buy them a small country lol

Well, I know the story behind Activision, Bizarre and Microsoft.
This one is fair enough, Bungie want to be able to make whatever they want rather than continue on Halo.

Why not do both? Halo makes more than enough money to fund other projects.

Way too much money and way too many new people have bought the 3rd game for there not to be a 4th.

There is little reason for any 3rd party developer to concerntrate on one console - its cutting your nose off to spite your face imo

EVERY financial reason to diversify

But if they are owned by Microsoft they aren't a 3rd party developer.

I can understand why they wouldn't want to continue with the Halo franchise. Not everyone in the studio will be obsessed with money, there's plenty of creative types too who will want to let their creative juices flow and work on something new and different.

the rumour states that the shareholders bought the studio name back from MS - so theefore they have become a 3rd party no? (If the rumour is true)

Oh yeah. I thought you were saying that was a reason for them to split from MS.

Hmm messy. I was reading this over on Kotaku yesterday.

You know it could be true that they are sick of making Halo games and want a change. I think its more likely you'll have a mass leaving and setting up of an 'independent' games developer (of course probably with large financial backing) without the Bungie brand. This could even happen on good terms with MS, who could welcome them back in as third party. 'Created by the guys who made Halo' is a fantastic games seller.

I will bet my hat (if I had one) that you will not see either Halo or Bungie moving cross platform. MS owns the IP and the name, and it would be madness to let them go.
