Im having problem with a the Crysis BETA and Q4 and a few other online games. Basically, everything is fine in Vista, I get 30ish pings, but in XP, they are 150+ and the games are really laggy. HL2DM in XP is fine tho. I get my usual 30 ping, so I dont understand what is causing the problem. I have updated XP, latest drivers etc. The reason I want to sort this is I know that XP gives slightly more fps than in Vista, especially in Crysis beta.

They made significant changes to the networking code for Vista, it might just be a lot more efficient than XP with your particular router.

Then again, maybe your XP network card driver is a bif naff, or needs updating.

Could be a lot of things, spyware etc. and what Sleepery said. I can remember formatting a few years back to discover my computer was fast :p Cleaned it religiously ever since.

what kind of fps difference are we talking here?

He's referring to 30 ping vs 150 ish ping, not really anything to do with FPS (imo)
Take UT04 for example (not played the games he's referring to). At 30 latency it's great, at 150 it's completely unplayable.

Massive difference between vista/xp - but its only when I play online. In XP I ping Crysis servers 100-200 and the fps is just unplayable. Im stripping XP down to its pants, hoping its something that is running in the background. Cant think of anything else to try except for reinstalling XP, but that will overwrite the bootloader (i think?)
I gotta sort it for Crysis, because Ive read somewhere XP gives an extra 10fps over Vista

show us your add/remove programs list

make sure you don't have any of these running..

automatic updates (for windows)
filesharing programs

Control panel>system>advanced>startup and recovery settings (area)>settings>system startup>edit and save a copy to a location you can retrieve it from after reinstalling XP (i.e. not on the C: drive if you installed XP there).

before you un-install /reformat anything:

Are you on a wireless network? if so try this:

Start > Run > services.msc > Wireless Zero Configuration > Disable and Stop

Reboot and give it a try. It worked for me when I had huge pings using wireless over ethernet

Do you not think it might be wise to actually wait for it to be released and see for yourself, rather than pulling your hair out now, possibly for nothing?

Just a thought.

You have to be kidding me, for 60 fps over 50? I'd put money on you not being able to tell the difference, Vista is better for games lately anyway it seems.
