40Gb PS3 listed on UK website

Well to be honest Sony have to do something to try and sell consoles, I was reading today that 55% of their sales came in the first 4 weeks, not sure how that compares to the 360 but the article seemed to be mocking it so guess it can't be too good.

Or you could look at the other way and say that Sony have already outsold MS in Europe - despite being on sale 12 months shorter.....

swings and roundabouts really:)

It's more in reference to AAA games that justify the cost of the console. Most of those in that list are average at best, or can be had on the 360.

So the entertainment value of being able to watch/listen to high quality film isnt worth anything? What bs.

The point I was making was with reference to all the betamax owners who were left stranded when VHS finally won the war.
It's has nothing to do with you as an individual already investing in Blu-ray films.
I know that some people will be early adopters of new technology which is totally understandable.
DVD-R/+R co-exists in the same players/recorders, It would also be great if the same could happen with Blu-ray / HD-DVD but I doubt it will happen.

Hee, hee how do you like them apples folks.
This place is great for bantering gotta say.

Is a PS3 worth buying? Does it have enough or exclusive games?
Are gamers with X360s already, missing out? New adopters, is X360 still better platform or now with reduced prices and Blu Ray etc put the PS3 a stronger position?

One things for sure...
HDTVs are selling like crazy and when people buy one they usually want to show it off with Hi Def material in games or movies. For that purpose the PS3 is in a much stronger position.

Sony still make blunders aplenty but finally within the upcoming 6-12 months the console on a gaming level should be in the position of taking Microsoft head on. Thats what dissapointed me with the original release, not the price the lack of movies and games at launch.

Good times are coming oh yeah!!!

Several players will be coming to the market soon.
Samsung is one brand thats bringing dual format

Yes I know but would either Sony and MS agree to use a ROM drive like this in their consoles?
Ideally we only need one HD format but with the manufacturers devided, getting them to all agree on one format will be a task and a half.

Ok and while they are at it why not make it also play "wii" games too? Theirs no need for them to offer dual format movie support.
Each company backed new technology, for one their console is also the biggest factor of if the platform will be a success or not.

Microsoft / Xbox 360 has nothing to loose if HD DVD fails, Sony on the other hand well thats entirely different. Even so if it fails as a movie format its more than capable of sustaining itself as a data/games format.

UMD disc springs to mind.

I think Sony will be making a huge mistake in the UK if they offer no kind of BC at all - even a complete software emulator would be better than nothing

Software emulation is quite simply rubbish (look at 360 emulation, or the PS2's PS1 emulation), it's hardly worth bothering with.

You can pick up a PS2 for £90 brand new and will be able to for a few years yet, but then again who doesn't already have a PS2? if you're buying a PS3 it's pretty much a guarantee that you've had a PS2 before it.

I've never owned a PS2 but I'd like to get a PS3 eventually.
The new 40GB version is tempting for me because I have no interest in using it via wireless and I'm not bothered by backward compatibility either.
I know a lot of people still have a huge collection of PS2 games, but surely isn't the point of a next generation console to well, play next generation games?
Or am I just being a graphics snob?

I don't think you're being a graphics snob at all. I would have to be really bored and stuck for something to do before I tried a previous gen game in the 360 or PS3. It's the same with PC - I never play games from bygone eras. It's always something new and then you move on to the next new one.

What relevance does that have on the format war and to what I've been saying about the two HD technologies?

Its not revelant at all, thats my point.

The same reason its not relevant for Sony to put in a drive that reads HD-DVDs. You forget that PS3 is Sonys and Blu Rays best chance, somehow dont think you will one day see them supporting HD-DVD in a hurry particulary on their own console, uh ahhh...

Likewise why would Microsoft seek to obtain internal HD-DVD never mind dual compatible drive for its console to further add to the manufacturing cost not to mention hundreds of thousands it would cost to develop and test software that will make it possible.

Bargin standalone players will arrive and by the time the next gen of HD-DVD / BLU RAY combi machines launch. I bet you a large Starbucks you could still buy two standalone units for less than the combi players.

MS simply didn't include the HD-DVD because for them right now its not needed, another 3 yrs and then their next machine will probably have whatever has become mainstream, be 2times more powerfull than the PS3. MS IMHO isn't in this next-gen war right now for the long term benefit, they wanted a head start on the PS3, developers to realise that there is money to be made on their machine and then deliver the killer blow and steal a massive headstart on ps4 and trounce the PS3 spec wise due to SOny already commiting themselfs to a 10yr lifespan , meaning that they probably have another 5/6/7 yrs to go with the ps3

Seriously now, when do you think the rumour mills will start churning out goodies about the 3rd Xbox? Do you think it will be launched in or before 2010?

And now people are getting a Blu Ray top spec player for free, wanna price one of those seperate? Its still a bonus for the consumer even if their not big movie watchers. Same goes for movie lovers that arnt big gamers eh. Bargin both ways imo.

As for just knocking the price off the 60gb/80gb etc

Id assume several things, reports that it might only have 2xUSB sockets, could be a possibility, wifi more than likely will still be included and the fact thats its manufactured soley at a different plant possibly by a different contractor.
Such a deal between Sony and a manufacturer would have agreed unit prices and more than likely costing less than the ones Sony have used for the 60gb/80gb models.

Ha Ha reduced manufacturing costs combined with new SKU = reduced selling price = buy one if your interested but felt the original prices were to high.

Of course I see they are getting a Blu-Ray player, but that's only because Sony made all games on Blu-Ray discs to try and make the new primary format Blu-Ray.

When I buy a games console I want games first. Anything else is a bonus, but my primary reason for a games console is only for games. Also, I've see the Samsung BR player several times in the past for £250.

McManic that theory of yours in regards to MS releasing another machine and sony sticking with the ps3 for another couple of years is flawed.

Sony said a ten year lifespan for ps3 much in the same vein as ps2 is now, sony will release a new console around the same time as the next xbox but will continue to support the ps3 the same as they have done the ps2 and the ps1 before that rather than the murder job MS pulled on the original xbox after they released the 360.

Your theory smells like an xbox fanboy's fantasy not common sense.

Needles is spot on. I can't see how anyone can think Sony will actually push the PS3 as a primary console for 10 years, however I do think 10 years is perhaps being a little too ambitious, I can only think they say 10 years because that's how long they expect Blu-Ray to last.
