BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 640MB
OR
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC2 768MB

I play at 1280x1024 i love to play games at max quality with no stuttering.
This will be my last upgrade for this pc, so i would want it to last for as long as possible.
Is there a huge performance gap between the two that can justify the price difference.
If i buy the first card i could get it next week, but if i wait and get the other one ill have to get it a little later.

GTX totally overkill for that res mate, I would save the ££ and get a OcUK value 8800GTS IMO

Cheapest GTX you can get your hands on, the OcUK one was £300 last time I looked.

If you've got the money I would say it's worth the extra over a 640mb GTS and will last a fair bit longer.

Yes there is a big performance gap but for current games at your res it might be a case of getting 100 fps on the 8800 GTS and 150 fps on the 8800 GTX but both will be as smooth as silk.

But if you want it to be your last for a long time, the GTX is the safer bet as games will get more and more demanding.

However, rumours hit today that they are going to release a new GTS in November with 122 stream processors which will be half way between the GTS and GTX performance so less of a gap and maybe worth waiting for to see what happens.

No it isn't, will last him ages, and he can ramp up the AA/AF, when ppl are upgrading their GTX's as they are playing on uber resolutions and so are beginning to struggle, his will still be cutting through everything fine at his res, so he won't have to go and lash out on a new card like those, thus saving some money. :)

Id just get the OcUK one for £300.

A GTX 768 not overkill at 1280X1024 my old X1950 pro was overkill on that res :p and that was on a P4

It isn't overkill, it's going to be his last upgrade and needs to last as long as possible. If he has £300, which going by his post he does, it is worth the extra cost over a 640mb 8800GTS.

I think 'A GTX 768 not overkill at 1280X1024' was supposed to sarcastic, doesn't translate well to text though...

Fair enough, just giving my opinion and that’s what I would have gone for in his situation he asked for peoples advice and I gave him mine.

Sorry missed that :o

I thought he was saying a 1950 was overkill and a 8800 GTX wasn't and that was the sarcastic bit as in why get a 8800 GTX as my 1950 is overkill blah, blah

sorry

He is saying the GTX is overkill at 1280x1024, he just repeated what i said about it not being overkill, like in that way "you what, an 8800 GTX not overkill" and then saying his x1950pro was overkill at that res on a P4, so the GTX will be.

Eg. "You what!!!, an 8800 GTX not overkill at 1280x1024, i used to have an x1950pro that was overkill at that res, and that was on a P4".

:D:D Yeah! we got there :D

Well i just got back from work and after reading your post, i clicked the order button for the BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC2 768MB, now its overkill:D
This being my first nvidia card i have some questions:
1. Should i dl the latest forceware drivers or should i let vista dl there ones?

2. will it fit in my pc:p i got a akasa 62 case and my motherboard is in sig.

1. I'd always get the latest drivers as they tend to give better performance

2. A bit late if it doesn't :p Seriously the GTX are very long cards and in a lot of cases they won't fit without moving the hard drive cage or cutting a slot in it . Not familiar with your case but in mine I would have to.

3. I'm not not lost anymore........;)
