Hey :-)

Had a seach around but couldn't find much so I'd thought I'd ask and get some opinions. I'm after some epic world war films watch. Or even stuff from Vietnam or "small" wars, such as Full Metal Jacket. Seen the following so I'd be interested in anything else but those:

  • We Were Soldiers
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Full Metal Jacket
  • Apocalyse Now
  • Flags of our Fathers
Any other "epic" war movies that people can recommend watching? Something like the above would be great, but open to suggestions.

Some good films that are well worth watching:
The Longest Day (awesome cast)
Go Tell The Spartans (not enough people have seen this)
The Eagle Has Landed
Stalingrad
All Quiet on the Western Front
Enemy at the Gates (so so, but nice visuals)
Windtalkers (
Black Hawk Down
Platoon (Fantastic)
A Bridge to Far

I love war films and all that, but I just didn't get into that film, and turned it off within an hour, and yet I heard really good things about it.

wow never heard anybody say that before :O

well worth trying to watch again, it's an epic must see

To be a "Epic" film, there must be an all-star cast, and the film must be gigantic in scope, with major stars prepared to play bit parts.

There's only one that can be truly classed as epic, and that's "A Bridge Too Far".

You are joking. I hated it. It was like watching a war version of Independance Day. After the ump-teenth "We will fight for our freedom" crap; I lost enthusiasm for it.

Not exactly authentic but Where Eagles Dare, Heroes Of Telemark are decent entertainment. A Bridge Too Far theres lots and usually the older one.

Also take a look at some books, they really give you an insight as to what went on for real.

Some already mentioned above, but my list:

The Longest Day
Stalingrad
A Bridge Too Far
Patton
The Big Red One - the 'finished' version
Battle of the Bulge
The Bridge at Remagen
Anzio
Waterloo
Gettysburg

And you could just watch Band of Brothers all the way through - that would be epic wouldn't it?

Some really great suggestions, thanks folks! Will check most of them out and see what I fancy watching. Elvisfan, I think I probably used "epic" incorrectly. I kinda mean great movies that have excellent stories but don't really have to have an all-star cast. Such as Flags of our Fathers, I only really class Ryan Phillipe as a huge star but the film itself was brilliant.

I actually just thought about that earlier, didn't think anyone would mention it as it was semingly a mini, but high budget, tv series. Seems to be praised a lot on IMDB although some of the stuff praised on there is kinda garbage. Anyone actually seen them all and think it's worth watching?

Band of brothers is well worth watching :) also try letters from iwo jimi i thought it was slightly better than flag of our fathers even tho its subtitled japanese.

downfall/der undergang also good based around the last days of hitler subbed german
blackbook/zwartboek also good about a dutch resistance women who infiltrates with a german soldier subbed german

Only slightly? I thought it blew it away after struggling to sit through Flags.

Oh, you have to watch this, though I admit that it's more an interpersonal story than a war/battle/shooty-stabby film. Don't let that put you off it, mind.

I'll also add to the voices recommending A Bridge Too Far. It's long, but it's considered a pretty accurate account of Operation Market Garden - something that'd be worth reading up on to get the most from the film.
