Blown Up Gear box

He has a third party warranty, where you're not allowed to have the work undertaken at a main dealer.

Oh, right, well surely if his 3rd party warranty covers a new box there is no need for this thread, nor any effort to do it cheaper?

If it turns out that they won't warrant a gearbox explosion, then get it to a main dealer and ask for an exchange box.

The thread was here to show what damage I did originally. And the guys in the garage really doubt I'll be able to claim, so may have to get it off them and get it over to fiat.

I wouldn't take their word for it, you need to get hold of the warranty company and check what the policy covers. There is no way a spectacular diff failure could be construed as normal "wear and tear" so you should be able to claim from any half decent warranty.

why? dealership will rape you for parts. as i said earlier, the parts are common. and tbh its not a difficult (imo) DIY job either.

You can't exchange a gearbox if the casing is damaged.

I'm not a DIY sorta guy. I need the car back ASAP and I'm too busy to do it myself. I agree if I get the part through the dealer they will rape me. I cant exchange the box. So either I gotta cross my fingers and hope the warranty company are respectible folk and can see that this isn't wear and tear and is definately a failure worthy of a claim, or I got a nice big bill to pay thats going to be edging up towards four figures...

If you can find a cheap gearbox and supply me with beer we could probably do it in a day easily.

PS. stop skiving off and get some work done :p

Just got a phone call off the garage. The planet gear took out a lot of other gears on the way out. So the dude is going to replace the casing on mine, then all the gears inside it, the put it back on with a new clutch. He's asking £625 for the whole lot. He also strongly advises against getting a second hand cluth as they can be more trouble then they're worth.
He's also going to get in touch with the warranty company and see what they make of it all.

So basically, a new gearbox? He's probably saying that so that it sounds more 'involving' and therefore you'll be happy to pay more. There's no way he's going to manually build a gearbox for you.

£625 sounds mega steep. When I blew the gearbox on my old car, a new box cost me £100, fitting was £80... so a new clutch fitted on top of that would have been another £80 or so.

Of course, with your Punto being newer than my car, parts will demand higher prices, but I'm sure there must be several in scrap yards somewhere.
