Thousands of fake cheques worth an estimated £8m have been seized in an operation targeting international e-mail scams.

The cheques, offered as prizes in exchange for a fee and destined for the UK, were recovered in Nigeria by the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca).

This is due to the "419" scams but what I was shocked at was that this sort of scam was supposed to cost the UK an estimated £3.5 billion a year. We like to laugh at some of the e-mails that other forum members post but it just goes to show how serious it really is. Another interesting point is that many people on dating web sites are targeted because they are more likely to be reluctant in reporting the fraud, probably due to fear of ridicule.

The example given about one man sending £12,000 to a "woman" he met online makes me wonder if we should really laugh at the people conned or not.

Nice to see they have made some progress against these scammers. I was also surprised to see how much money was actually involved, you'd assume that everyone would be wary of this type of scam.

I suppose they rely on the trusting or vulnerable to reply. I pity them really, I suppose the old line that if something looks to good to be true, it probably is, rings true in this case.

Laugh at them. Their own fault tbh. As the advert goes;

If it looks too good to be true, then it probably is.

Out of interest, all these Nigerian scammers on ebay.. they are all based in Nigeria, right? Can't ebay just block all Nigerian IP addresses or will they just use a proxy?

Anyone see the special report on Sky News yesterday. They raided an address in Nigeria which looked just like a terraced house and inside it was like a call centre. One of the scammers was caught in the act of replying to someone on Ebay.
