Not only has it done the impossible and got to no.1 but reports are flooding in that it's widely sold out so may even do quite well next week.

The hardware numbers are out tonight and will make for an interesting read. (Last week saw the 360 sell 1,687 compared to 10,732 PS3s and 24,992 Wiis).

Not bad for Halo 3 at all, some places have it third behind FF crisis core and the 2 new pokemon games (counted as one), looks like the 360 sales went up 198% to 5000+ which is great for the 360. If you compare this to the Blue dragon launch though its no where near as good, Blue dragon sold 83K and was third top was Gundam with 330K sales ( compared with 50-65K for the number 1 spot this week), but most impressive was the 748% increase  in 360 sales to nearly 38 K!!! This shows why Microsoft want good JRPGs in Japan they push software and hardware more than any other Genre (well apart from looking after dogs, little creatures and brain training).

The sad thing is, MS spent far more money on distantly third place Japan than close second place Europe. They have their priorities totally screwed up.

Totally agree. MS are supposably putting more effort into Europe but as far as I can see it's business as usual. I watched the Man Utd Roma game on ITV on Tuesday. As well as a lot of Playstation adverts around the ground there was a Fifa 08 advert for PS2/PS3 and a Heavenly Sword advert in the first break. No Halo 3, no Fifa 08 for the 360.

But just you wait for Christmas adverts. I'd hazard you'll get at least one 360 advert every other break.

Plus there are a lot of 360/ps3 and especially Halo adverts at cinemas now in the trailers section (I saw a film last week and got a Heavenly Sword advert and 3 Halo 3adverts!!). By xmas it will be fever pitch and I will hear that stupid 360 swishy sound at the end of the advert (it's almost as annoying as those intel inside jingles!!!).

Japan, while still a very important market, is nowhere near as important as it used to be. Arguably a bigger and more lucrative market at the moment is Europe.

MS don't need to break Japan to make money... would be nice for them though :p

Are you sure?

2005: $485 million loss
2006: $1.26 billion loss
2007: $1.89 billion loss

Looks like they need to break into neighbouring galaxies. :p

Do you know many other companies who would still be in the market today after making a $3-4b loss?

Hehe exactly, MS certainly don't need the cash :)

They're definitely playing the 'long game' on this one. I'm not saying that they shouldn't or don't want to break into the Japanese market, I'm merely saying it's not as important as it used to be.

I imagine that quite a few Xbox 360s will be sold in the christmas rush in Japan, ONLY if Lost Odyssey is released on time (I still think it's due early December)
