Got a N95 being delivered tomorrow. Obviously I would like to use the GPS on it in the car.

I have heard that you have to pay for it via a internet connection is this true?

I am going to be on three network, and thought that as it has a GPS inbuilt it only uses GPS satelites so should be free?

How does it all work?

GPS is built in. It can find out where it is. Maps are downloaded either over the net, or over the 3G network as and when they are needed. They are free on O2, not sure about 3 tho.

Also the inbuilt GPS reciever is pretty poor. You'll be lucky to get it to work inside your car...

Yep the GPS is built in and free, and the Nokia maps are free also, if you download them first then put them on your phone - or alternatively if you are on an unlimited data plan with 3 the maps with download automatically depending on your location. However if you want navigation with the Nokia maps you will need to pay for this.

Alternatively you can buy some mapping programmes that work with the N95.

The GPS is actually very good if your phone is fully updated to v12 firmware, the old firmware was carp.

Well, i wouldn't go as far as saying very good lol. It can find the satalites a lot faster, but it still seems to take ages to sync up with them grr lol.

depends where you are, In London it takes about 5-10 secs but in the country it could take around 30 secs.

I tried it on some country roads when i was on the bus, using Orange GPRS to transmit data (£1 a day unlimited), the signal was rubbish. It loses track where I was and it jumps to the next point 5 miles down the road.

Once I was in a town and on foot it was a lot more accurate.

Have you turned on AGPS and are using v12 firmware?

Its part of the v12 firmware AGPS = Assisted GPS.

Goto Tools>Settings>General>Positioning>Positioning Methods then tick the Assisted GPS - this way you should get a faster and stronger connection.:)

how do you update the firmware on the phone? 8-)

Google Nokia updater, first link :p

Thou if your phone is network locked then the Nokia updater might not work has it'll update the generic firmware for your region. I and most people have unbranded it so it can get the latest one from Nokia rather waiting for the one provided by the network.
