hi all

really stuck here

my 7600gt needs to go into kids comp

so i need a new gfx

i have my xbox360 right under my desk and a lot of games are played on that

the only pc game i really play is pro evo 6 and the new 7 wich is coming

i do watch a fair few dvds and divx on my 19 inch widescreen monitor at a res of 1440x900 using the upscale in fdd show

i have always been a nvidia man but i have been told the ati cards are great for stuff like dvds and divx and give real good quality

im just not sure

prices i can get are

256MB Sapphire HD2600XT PCI-E(x16) 128Bit 2200MHz GDDR4 GPU 800MHz CrossFire 2xDVI-I/HDTV £60

256MB XFX 7900GS PCI-E (x16), Mem 1320 MHz, GPU 450 MHz, 20 Pipes, Dual DVI/HDTV £60

OcUK GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) £65

OcUK ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) £70

i just dont know the 1950 would be my choice but would the newer decoding features of the 2600xt be better for watching films and stuff

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

1950 pro seeing as you have an xbox 360 and all you use pc is for pro evo, though if yoyu want to cut down get 8600gt which is cheaper, but 1950 is the best out of the choice.

if your gonna be watching films more than gamimg i would say get a 2600xt.. its still good for gaming but for movies it does have a much better picture quality.

if your more of a hardcore gamer then get a 1950

yeah i dont really do many games only play in a pes leagues

i might play the odd fps if it takes my fancy but maxing out settings dont really get me going like some quite happy on normal settings with just application aa and af

ive had this 7600gt in a year now and have been very happy with it nd its played any games ive wanted to play and those 4 cards i think are all quicker than a 7600gt in dx9

i have a nforce 4 mobo skt 939 will i get any conflicts using ati gfx drivers and the nvidia chiset drivers for the mobo

right then think i have decided for once im gonna try ati and come away from the nvidia

looking at them there ads of different makes lol some with ddr2 some with ddr3 and some with 4

i heard that there is not much difference between 3 and 4 is this true

also would a 512me card be any better than a 256 one the reason i ask is i can get this

PowerColor HD2600XT 512mb DDR3 128bit DVI PCI-E Graphics Card for just a touch under 75 quid

which is about 8 quid more than a 256 version

is it worth it at all

what res will u be playing the few games at?

i have 256mb cards and i don't get any problems playing my games at 1650x1050, maxed out.....

hi gareth isee you have 2 cards in yours though or are you saying you can play ok at 1650x1050 with just the one card

if so that will suit me fine i think

my max res is 1440x900 and i dont really bother to much with aa and af i just leave them to be controlled by the game

also i think your proccy may be helping you a bit lol

i only have a x2 4200 with 2 gig ram

what ya think

u should be ok if u don't use aa.. ive never used aa, because i can't see the point of it, also at high res 1440x900 - 1650x1050 it still looks great..

x2 4200 with 2 gig ram is fine for 1 card

well if u wanna save abit of money just get the £64 card and you'll still get great performance..

but if your thinking about upgradeing your monitor any time soon , get the £74 card..

if u get the £74 card it'll be ready if u upgrade your monitor to a bigger size..

8600gt for under 50 quid delivered would have been the best bet.

i looked at the 8600gt and tbh i just wanted a change from nvidia and i seem to be watching more video and dvd now than games got my 360 besides my pc so i only play pes

and with the new decoder and stuff from ati getting good reveiws thought id have a pop

gareth i dont have powerdvd why ?

currentley using windows mediaplayer classic with the cccp pack for all files apart from divx which i make it use the divx codec as i find with my card i get a slightly better image

x1950 pro??? best card there and its £70 dont see and competition tbh.

and gareth, i find it hard to believe that the picture quality between 8600 and 2600 is that much different, any screenshots or summat to back this up?

taz i have spent a good week or 2 reading up on both these cards and they all say the same

if you watch a lot of movies be it dvd hd or divx then the 2600ht is way above the 8600gt in terms of performance and quality

ive ordered the 2600xt now if i dont like it then ill just put it in my kids machine and have my 7600gt back lol
