Serious point here... I agree with Ubuntu unless it's going to be used for any kind of gaming (can that gfx card handle many modern games?), in which case go with XP.
If you do go with Ubuntu hang on for a couple of weeks and try 7.10, which will have better laptop support. OpenSuse 10.3 is out and has many improvements (including half the boot time of 10.2), and F7 is a safe bet too. Several distros have 'laptop modes', have a read around - you'll get more out of your hardware with Linux if you just want a work and web machine. Just thought I'd chip in
