It seems to me at least that Nintendo don't want to meet the demand for whatever reason (and there are a few long term goals that will eventually go in Nintendo's favor by doing this). High demand, low supply means more sales in the longterm than if they saturate the market with the product now.
Sounds like you want them to be, and I quote, "very inefficient financially". Sustained interest is far more beneficial to them than a sudden spike of sales which tapers off.
