Hallo ,..

Consider to exchange my two 19" CRT with two 24" samsungs ,.. I see that there is both DVI and VGA input on the samsungs

My cards are rigt now mixed DVI/VGA, my question is if there will be a big
diffrence in quality at 1920 x 1200 between VGA and DVI on the new 24" ?

(try to figure if I need new dual-dvi graphic cards and new expensive DVI-KVM-switches)

thanks for any help

i use two 19" LCD's at work, 1 through VGA and the other through DVI.

there -IS- a noticeable difference in the quality between DVI and VGA.

it's mainly a brightness/contrast (ever so slight colouring) issue... but it is noticeable enough to have made me lower the brightness on the DVI screen to try and match the VGA screen ;o

- would really suggest a new graphics card with 2 DVI ports if you're any kind of serious viewer.

basically down to the screen.

electronics can be a cheap after thought to fill the "features quota" a general screen would have. or a company can spend a little more and put better electronics in for all the extra's. so generally on cheap screens with only a vga connector it will be high quality and offer good quality picture. the cheapest screens with dvi and vga will often skimp on the vga connector quality(it needs a decent analogue to digi convertor as the screen is digital) so the vga picure can look worse, but they expect 99% of users to just use the dvi.

but its really random tbh, need to ask about specific screens and peoples experience. you can get some of the cheap dvi +vga, with great vga, and some expensive screens with shoddy vga.

really good quality d-sub connection circuitry can lead to really, as good a picture as DVI, but its rare, and the cable is obviously possible to have interference on, so routing the cable away from other cables, power cables and the like is often needed, and a superior vga cable often helps, where dvi a cheap cable is just as good as an expensive one.

yes, there is both DVI-D and D-sub on the SM245B (I assume that's the one you're referring to?) There is a slight difference between the PQ for both, but ever so slight. I'm sat in front of one right now for testing, so anything else, just ask :)

Thanks to your all for the usefull info :) Yes SM245B,. but it would take some
time to save up for such two, I am glad to hear the VGA is "decent" in case it
will be needed, I build/reconfigure/upgrade 4 networked PCs for video-editing
and render farms, so we are talking 4 new graphic cards, (dual dvi), and two
expensive new QUAD-DVI-KWM´s in case I imigrate from VGA to DVI,..will set
me back many mounths, a very big expense, but for reasons drunkenmaster
did mention I guess I better wait a little longer and get ALL cards DUAL-DVI
from day one, the HD2400/HD2600 cards that I will likely use does have VGA
on both ports so I will be able to use my CRTs and analog KVMs for an start

No heavy heavy 3D or gaming just 2D 1920 x 1200 on both monitors, far as
I can see HD2400/2600 is OK for this, somone even mentioned in another
thread that HD2600 served him very well for graphic works

btw. that SM245B monitor seems like a gift from heaven, in one of our national dk-forums
I just saw a proffesional graphical worker who claimed that he would never had bought his
extremely expensive pro-monitor if he had known how close this normal SM245B is :)

yeah colour accuracy is pretty decent actually. Will have DeltaE graphs and stuff up soon in the review, but it's not a bad screen at all in that regard. Decent black depth too, even beats PVA based screens including the Dell 2407WFP-HC :) Bare in mind though, it is TN Film and so viewing angles can compromise things a little (especially at this size) when it comes to colour work. there'#s a contrast and colour shift as you move off centre, which is a problem to some colour critical work. Just bare it in mind

Thanks for all the info, and great site you got. btw the man I refered to was
comparing SM245B to a "XL20", (whatever that is),.. have one little question
in case you know, and that is if I can switch manually between VGA and DVI
and this way having two diffrent computers connected at once

the XL20 is one of Samsung's new 20" LED backlit displays.

Yes, you can easily switch between VGA and DVI input using a single button (source) on the front of the monitor :)

Thats all TOO good :D a shame a can´t afford right now, well maybe they will
