Got a phone call of Toys R Us today while I was on the bus.

They offered me a job in the warehouse part, where people give you tickets and you fetch things through. Sounded good until she said would you be willing to do 24 hours a week, 6pm till 10pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and 2pm till 10pm on a Saturday. I was on the bus so didnt have much of a chance to think about it and just said yes ofcourse on the phone. Now that I have thought it over if I did those hours I would have no social life and no time to study for college. Tried ringing back tonight but the person who called wasnt around. Going to ask for either 16 hours or more hours on a Sunday & Monday (i am off college on a monday) and less through the week and Saturday.

Hope we come to some agreement as the job sounds good and the pay is £4.40 per hour.

As everyone else has said £4.40 is pretty low to be honest, even for a 16 year old though dont let that dampen your hopes (you seem to be happy with getting £4.40 an hour by the sounds of it anyway), its a good place to work at since if you can get the hours their, you could earn some pretty good money over the period of a month and remember your only 16 years of age.

Very well done for getting the job by the way, i wish more people your age would do the same thing. Well done.

Given that the OP is only 16, I would try and negotiate your hours down to suit you. Once you are in the job, start looking for something else. It will also help you in your future interviews, when you tell them that you are currently employed.

If you choose to stay in retail (which, while you are a student, is likely), then your experience at Toy S R Us will stand you in good stead to get another job in retail (say Ikea - where you could find yourself working with your mate, which wouldnt be so bad).

Also, Im willing to bet that this £4.40ph rate is an introductory wage that will go up after you have served your probationary period and will move up further when you hit 18.

To work all evenings and earn £4.40 an hour you would do better just walking into an employment agency and saying "give me anything"

But if the morale is high and all of you guys are young and have a good laugh while working there, is it not worth it? Obviously if the management are ever present and treat you like slaves, then it isnt worth it.

There is a movie called "Waiting", about a restaurant, run by young people and tells us all the shenanigans that the staff get upto. They have a great laught while working there. I wouldnt want to do it long term, but if I was under 21, while studying, I think it would be fun. Ultimately, it comes down to your working conditions.

I went down on Saturday and was offered a job on Multimedia but the hours clashed 1 day with College so they said they would put me on hold while they try and sort some better hours out and give me a ring back sometime this week.

Lol, they will love it if you bamboozle them with geeks words. Ask for higher pay aswell, as you will be a rare commodity compared to average joe working in Toys R Us.

I started work there in 2004 at the age of 16 for £2.86 p/h...yes in 2004!
This only rose to £3p/h when they had to becuase of the min wage introduced for 16-18 year olds.
I left and got an easier job at tesco for £5.80p/h.

Congrats on the job offer hope they let you change your hours. At tesco i did 26 hours a week and i got lucky with my shifts and college meaning that it didn't interfere too much with my social life or college work, it can be done just need to be a bit flexable.

Wow, from past experience I know that supermarket work is quite tough. You simply dont get any rest as managers will find something for you to do, should you ever finish one task. The working conditions at your branch of JJB must have been shocking...their pay certainly is.
