Sony Make 40GB PS3 Standard

Are Sony backwards or in serious debt, MS offer 3 types of consoles at the moment, yet Sony one wants to offer one when it has two out in the UK.

I'm very interested in a PS3 at £299. BC doesn't interest me in the slightest and anything else cut is nothing really.

If I bought a PS£ it would be the PS3 games and DVD functions, and not to play PS2 games. Just like my X360 as I use it for this generation of games not games from a previous era.

I know what you mean, it was nice to play some games I missed though. I'm still playing FFXII and Okami which are the only games worth playing which I missed.

However you already get slightly put off by the graphics in some PS2 games after playing Motorstorm or Gears of War. Once the likes of MGS4 is out you don't really want to go back and spend time playing MGS2, especially when everything is in HD now.

Since you don't care about BC I would go ahead and buy it, lke mcwildcard said it's incredibly easy to upgrade the hard drive if you need more space later. Once PES is out I won't be off the thing :p

The new 40GB PS3 is missing a chip which is whats used for the software emulation. I know it sounds strange because that's basically what it was missing in the first place and only allowed software emulation but now it's missing another thing. So software emulation will never happen for the 40GB SKU.

That's what I gathered from the Joystiq article anyway.

EDIT: Also the 40GB SKUS are going to be the same in the US. So now you can laugh at the US people who laughed at us.
You are right.

The american consoles had two ps2 chips.
The eu console had only one ps2 chip and emulated the other chip via software.
The new 40gig console has both the ps2 chips removed and can not play ps2 games.

They have removed both the ps2 chips from the 40gig version.

They only emulated the CPU and still included the PS2 GPU in the PAL 60 GB and 80 GB models. Now, they removed the PS2 GPU (the GS chip) which should save around $27 per machine.

Why are so many people against this move?

I have no idea my self - this is what Sony has needed to do for a long time. £425 was too much for me to justify spending all that green stuff on a games console being sold on potential (all the good games have yet to come out after all) and too much to buy for a dedicated Blu-Ray player. But £300 fits the bill quite nicely!

I'll be picking one up on Wednesday.

awww cmon sony bashing is great, crap but expensive tellies, consoles that copy other peoples ideas badly, execs who cant say anything without saying it badly. Gotta love it!

Since when have their tellies been crap?

Who cares what fundamental ideas have been stolen? As long as the games are high quality, original and/or fun, who cares?

And when have execs sold a games console? I bought my 360 and Wii through reviews - not what the execs said, and if that's part of the reason why you're against the PS3, you need to re-evaluate your way of thinking.

It's the fact that they say stuff and then go back on it. I wouldn't have too much of a problem with it had Sony not opened their obnoxious mouth.

What if the market turns around and says "we don't want BC afterall"? I mean, I had an original Xbox. I still owned it when I got my 360. The only Xbox game I ever put in to my 360 was Silent Hill 4 - and that lasted a whole 30 minutes. I can't understand who would buy a next-gen console to buy old-gen games.

I'm against it because:

Isnt that much the same as we dont need HDMI, or 20Gb is plenty Big enough , or even Black is so last gen. All i believe from Microsoft Execs (well not word for word), all company execs do it its part and parcel of business. Like was said earlier i wouldnt care if a company exec said the sky was pink and grass was orange, its their product i want.

Yeh but these are things that can be added. You don't take them away.

HDMI wasn't needed 2 years ago. 20Gb still is plenty for Europe as we have no video market place. Black is never new. People want it though ;)

You don't take thing's out which people use. Just like I wouldn't expect the next gen consoles to not come with a viewer to view images or videos. That's just going backwards :p

i didnt even know the 80gb had been released till i ordered my bros from the bunky auction site the other day. I got a brand new console, resistance fall of man and 2 controllers for £330 delivered. why do we always get the rough end of the stick in the uk?

You wouldn't. It's convenience. While someone might not care it no longer has it, other people might. Now they are going to feel a bit cheated as Sony have removed it to save on costs. Which ill benefit anyone who doesn't want BC.

I'm the same. Only Xbox game I have played on my 360 is Halo 2. It's nice to know I don't need to disconnect everything to plug in my Xbox though.

So where are all the sony fanboys that was laughing at the poor state of affairs the backwards compatabilitie the 360 had and how their Sony would never dismiss backwards compatability as its so important, now we see them saying it don't matter anymore becasue it makes the console cheaper.

laughs,

Their televisions are good, they've copied other peoples ideas better than other companies in the past and if you hate them because of their executives or PR people then take a look at all the other companies around you.

Do you like Jeff Bell then?

Is he the grinning Microsoft exec? Oh man, I could easily smack him round the chops with a faulty Xbox. His E3 press conference appearance had me crawling the walls. So smarmy.

Yeah, he also got caught signing up to a forum and asking a guy 'what is your contribution to society?' because the person on the forum had slagged him rotten.

back on topic, the 40GB PS3 can be had for £280 if you search about on the Internet :)

laughs,

You can now buy a brand new PS3 and 100% compatible PS2 for under £400, how is it bad that they have given you the choice as to whether you want BC or not instead of forcing it on you...?

It's not like the Microsoft situation where you *need* BC because the previous console was suddenly thrown on the scrap heap.

I'll take the single PS3 with upscaling thanks.

Also you could buy a single PS3 for under £400 for quite a while now, so why you'd want to buy a seperate PS2 is beyond me.
