Sony Make 40GB PS3 Standard

You can now buy a brand new PS3 and 100% compatible PS2 for under £400, how is it bad that they have given you the choice as to whether you want BC or not instead of forcing it on you...?

It's not like the Microsoft situation where you *need* BC because the previous console was suddenly thrown on the scrap heap.

Thrown on the scrap heap? Well why would MS need to produce a old console which didn't have a big fan base when they have a newer console? I don't understand why we *need* BC.

MS are not forcing it. Also Sony are not giving you a choice. The 40GB will replace the other SKUs. I see no choice when the other SKUs sell out.

If I'm reading this right then I'm annoyed...

I hope the 80GB is over in the UK for a decent price by the time I get one next year, I don't want the crappy cutdown version. :(

I don't know why Sony have to keep messing stuff up for Europe. :o

Good god, one of the biggest trollers of ps3 threads for a long time ( maybe not so bad now ) complains that he can't have the expensive version he slagged off for ages, the irony ( don't know when you have it good, eh? )

So where are all the sony fanboys that was laughing at the poor state of affairs the backwards compatabilitie the 360 had and how their Sony would never dismiss backwards compatability as its so important, now we see them saying it don't matter anymore becasue it makes the console cheaper.

laughs,

Not all people who think that the ps3 is an excellent piece of kit cared or trolled 360 threads about BC, next-gen console for me means next-gen games.

Funny thing is your statement smacks of being a fanboy yourself, foot in mouth disease indeed.

And for £299 I have yet to see a better spec machine.

You realise Jihad would have nothing to bitch about if they the 40Gb was the same as the 80Gb?

People have got to stop saying people are trolls when they are the people with common sense. Sony are doing things wrong. Just because people aren't stupid doesn't make them a troll.

Please!, common sense......really? Seems to me that common sense would dictate that a machine with the capability of the ps3 when offered for £299 should be seen as nothing more than a bargain.

Who the hell wants to play ps2 games on a HDTV anyway ?, and if it is such a concern just keep your ps2 where it is, for if you have ps2 games you must have the machine.

My biggest gripe is the fact that the machine got bashed ( and rightly so ) over its price and its unnessecary features, so they remove some that are not needed for playing ps3 games and people start crying over BC, when the running joke for awhile was that the only thing to play on the machine where ps2 titles.

Funny thing is I never said he was trolling this thread but on his past posts on ps3 threads, and the irony is that he had a ps3 with BC, flogged it, trolled threads for awhile and then cries about the fact that BC is now missing in the later version.......priceless.

People with common sense would know they can get a 60Gb machine with 2 games and BC for £350 on Wednesday too ( allegedly ) . The 60Gb is being phased out in all regions, including Japan soon, i'm sure the 60Gb will be replaced by the 80Gb if thats what SCEE thinks it needs to do. In America they are still selling 60gbs 3 months after it was announced they was being phased out, im sure the PAL versions will be around for months.

PS3 owners have said that it upscales them beautifully?

Only couple of features I can think of which aren't needed are blu ray (but I will let it off as the games "need" it) and SIXAXIS.

I haven't read Jihads previous post's so can't comment on that one.

msmalls74, yeah probably going to take a while to shift all that stock hey ;)

Yep probably about the same time all the older version 360s get replaced with Falcon chip sets:p

Didn't know how to spell it ha!

Hey I can take it, all systems have there flaws. The Wii is a white device which only gets played when friends are round. The 360 used to be a dead machine (it's pretty much been solved now) and the PS3... has... some flaws. Oh would you look at that I don't have time to list them, I have to go to bed. :p

DS Lite > anything tbh

Gotta say M$ 360 has won this round in regards to customer service, sure there 360's are abit unreliable, but there getting better now, and MS replaced them. The games are awesome, nearly ALL are available on ALL consoles, and MS offer the 360 at a good price compared to PS3, also MS took the advantage and offered FULL xbox's everywhere in the world, not having differing console abilitys and specs just because of where you were born....

Quite simply MS have offered a good console, at a good price with good backwards compatability, with awesome online services whlie also offering some awesome exclusive games, with 99% of the games available that are available on other consoles, AND there HDMI out and HD-DVD DRM approach works on any HDTV, they have not screwed us over in that department, and have taken care of there customers

Good old fashioned common sense and customer service with all the above points ticked in the checkbox, well done MS, why has sony failed on every single one of those points? beggers belief, dont they like customers?

Easy there...

Sony's Customer service is apparently very good. This is a PS3 thread... try to ease off the 360 lovin. (I love it too but shhhh)

No I'm worried that I won't be able to get my hands on a 60GB in December time as I might get one for Blu-Ray when I get my new TV, I just hope I don't have to wait too long because I want BC and the 'proper' PS3. I just don't see the point, they should have just left the starter pack at £350 and be done with it, no need for this 40GB rubbish.

You know things break, a quote from peter moore ( almost 11 million 360's built containing the same hardware flaw ), Robbie Bach ( Head of the entertainment division ) sells a couple of million dollars worth of shares before the announcement ( nice business ethics there he keeps his money while people loose money over scratched disks ), refurbs sent back as repaired machines that have the lifespan of a gnat.

Overpriced peripherals and so on.

Excellent customer service there.

Jihad, I just don't understand you, was blu-ray playback an unnessecary feature that inflated the price when you originally had one?

It seems to me that a lot of people slagged of the machine when the features where of no use to them at the start but as they feature set becomes more attractive to them, they then bemoan the fact that sony have tried to deal with the biggest critisim of all......price!

Personally I've never used the card reader on my PS3 and I don't expect to ever need 4 USB ports all at once. The only real loss worth mentioning is the backwards compatability, but for the reduced price, you can't complain. It's £125 cheaper!

This reminds me of when people complained that the PS3 wouldn't have 2 HDMI ports, 6 USB ports and 3 ethernet ports. Who really needs those things? The 40GB model is exactly what the PS3 should have been from the start, except with BC.

ps3 for £299 - great move
bc - couldn't give a toss
and just put a bigger hard drive in it if you need one

If the linux port of xbmc is a success and runs on ps3, i'll get one as a media centre alone.

You wouldn't. It's convenience. While someone might not care it no longer has it, other people might. Now they are going to feel a bit cheated as Sony have removed it to save on costs. Which ill benefit anyone who doesn't want BC.

I'm the same. Only Xbox game I have played on my 360 is Halo 2. It's nice to know I don't need to disconnect everything to plug in my Xbox though.

These customers had a choice and chose not to buy it originally - why fault Sony for this?

laughs,

I admit - I thought Sony shouldnt remove BC, but I can also see how much the ps2 chip was actually costing them so the customer had a choice to buy it at top whack, if they dont want to (which it looks like most dont) then I cant see how you can fault Sony for testing the market with something that is for the most part identical to its predecessor

Ive never used my card reader either to be honest (for the £125 you can buy a brand new Ps2 and still save money) - I still think 60GB was a good size to aim for though - 20GB was EOL and 40GB was near going out of production, also with Sony's plans for the PS3 to be a digital PVR 60GB isnt going to last very long at all (although of course you can swap it out easily, but best to do this at the start rather than having hassle of transferring all the contents already there)
