Driving test in own car...

Thats ok. If they think theres a problem developing they will terminate the test asap. So lets say you are peeping and creeping out of a closed junction.

However your observations are not good. The examiner with dual controls may well wait until you start to move off in front of the big scary bus and use the dual control brake to stop you. You have the chance to at least look again and spot the bus and not go. the examine will wait as long as is safe before taking action.

Equally if you have no duals they will tell you to stop if you dont look like you are taking good observations a lot sooner then in the above situation by which time if you are already moving off it may be to late.

Does that make sense?

OK, but if they have pressed the brake then they have allready decided that there is a serious fault with your driving and thus failed anyway..

Well thats a given. My point is that you have more of a chance to correct the mistake if they have duals as they will wait untill the last possible moment before they press the pedal.

Thus you can think, damn I did not look left! then you turn your head and scream like a girl when you spot the bus and press the brake instead of the gas :D Its only a fault if you move off etc.

If you dont have duals they'll take action at the first sign of you doing something daft.

I'll try and think of a better scenario.

After failing my first test in my instructors car (Clio Mk3) I decided that I was ready enough to not need anymore lessons and just practiced in my mums car (Clio Mk2) every evening for a couple of weeks.

Got there and had to produce the MOT as the Clio had some known faults with the bonnet popping open during driving! I felt much more 'at home' in my mums car and didnt have any problems and managed to pass with 6 minors :)

So my advise is go for it! Its about feeling comfortable and relaxed on the test and I felt much more relaxed in a car I was driving every evening rather than an instructors car which I would only use once a week. Plus you get to save on 2 hours of instructors fees - bonus!

My Dad for various reasons took a manual driving test in TVR Griffith 4.3. I can absolutely gaurantee that is the gods honest truth. THe instructor had no issues at all, as it was a perfectly legal road car.

well, I had a reply from them, I asked them specifically if I would be covered during a driving test because I had been told this may not have been the case. The reply was..
I would like to confirm that as a provisional licence holder you will be
covered to drive the car provided you are supervised at all times by an
appropriately qualified person.

i had a test in a bad halfords spec excort 1.6 16v turbo sticker with busted lambda so it didnt go fast. I failed but only cos i tried to kill some old lady and yelled "thats 10 points!" before realising my mistake :(

You'll be fine
