Am about to buy a new phone (lost my old one, and I'm too bored to claim on the insurance.) I've not really been watching the mobile scene, so what sort of things are top of the market spec-wise at the moment?

Looking to go on contract.

Is the N95 totally dominating it at the moment, or are there other cheaper but still good options? I've been told the Samsung G600 is quite nice.

The G600 has one major problem... it's a Samsung, and IMO, Samsung's OS is horrendous (not a patch on either of Nokia's OSs, or Sony Ericsson's OS). The K850 is a fairly decent choice, but you do sacrifice a number of features that you get in the N95. The N95 is basically an all-rounder.

The N95 looks good, apart from the fact I don't like the graphite/silver one. Any ETA on the black one (8GB)?

had a rather lengthy chat to the guy at voda this afternoon (as im due for upgrade).

according to him, the N95 is the single most returned handset for warranty repairs that is currently stocked. he strongly recommended 6110 (if i want a phone tomorrow) or if i can hold on, k850i on tuesday.

i was seriously considering N95 as it has the mp3 player, 5mp camera and sat nav. obviously the sales guy at voda will be on commission and they will be told which handsets to recommend. but, still he said if you really want sat nav, 6110 navigator. if you realy want a camera k850i its sony cybershot. surely if nokia camera is better than the sony one, then nokia would be in the market of digital cameras aswell, no?

just my input.

If you look around the net at this you will see this is mostly down to voda's branded firmware they install on the N95.

Many many people have been 99% prob free when they have debranded the N95 to get rid of the vodafone junk

It's difficult to judge... since the N95 has sold so well, it's only common sense that more will have been returned for warranty. What we need to know is the percentage of N95s returned in comparison to other phones. This doesn't tell us anything otherwise.

About the digital cameras reminds me of something. Nokia are actually the number one digital camera brand in the world in terms of numbers sold. This is of course if you consider a camera in a phone a 'digital camera'.

W960i, K850i.

Personally I would avoid nokias as my past 3 experiences with them have been quite bad. If you decide you want a Nokia, I would make sure you go to a phone shop and play with a live model for a while first.

Yeah, ditto with the SEs. My SE K750 had some shocking build quality (very creaky plastic, battery cover wobbled etc) so definitely try out any phone before you buy.

I have just got a new contract 3 weeks ago with an n95, , and am already on my 5th handset. when it works its a brilliant phone tho. my bfalso has an N95, nad his has had no problems at all. :)

Most of the "mass market" phones are very cheaply made so that they maintain decent margins in a competitive industry.

My K800i has been great the last 18 months, no probs and nice build quality. Dont really like the buttons though, bit too rubbery. The K850i has a better quality image from the camera than the Nokia so the reviews say and its mainly the camera that I am going for, although MP3 player is also important. I prefer Sonys menu systems as I always get lost using a Nokia. Also its easy to transfer stuff to the phone via the sony PC suite.
