Did you add a floppy drive to your last custom build?

I have one on my cardboard box full of PC stuff, haven't had it installed for quite a while though. My previous motherboard (Abit AN8-SLI) didn't need a disk with SATA drivers for XP, and my current board doesn't need them either (whether that's down to Vista or not, I don't know). BIOS updates are done with a USB flash drive.

Glad to be rid of it, just wish I had another blank front plate for my P160 though, because I've got the floppy disk slot, but no drive behind it. Looks a bit silly.

I haven't bothered with one.

I have a couple lying around though, so if ever need it I can put it in but, tbh, I've never used the one I put in my last build so why bother?

I stuck in an akasa card reader in its place instead.

I'd recommend doing the same, you don't need a FDD :)
Now that's a good idea!

I've not had a floppy in my last few PCs, this weekend I threw away any remnants of that carp technology (last box of discs and an old drive I found).

TBH I can't stand offline storage, whether it's tape, disc, cd, dvd, etc. I'm now keeping everything online.

I have a USB floppy if I had to read a disc that someone gave me (that is if it can be read, they are so ******* unreliable)

i've not had a floppy for a while. they're not much good for anything other than bios flashes. i only ever used to use them for transporting files, but now you can mail stuff or put it on a usb stick or whatever.

i remember when games came on floppies! my first pc had a 5.25" floppy drive!

Your too young :p

No offence.

Youve not lived untill youve installed Windows 95 from 13 Floppy's :)

Your lucky...mine was a later version and took 24 floppy's!
It's a real pain when it has problems reading one of the disc's.

I reckon the next PC I make will prolly be the first one that doesn't have a floppy.
Mainly as BIOS files these days are too big for floppy's, and its just as easy to use a USB flash drive (and prolly more reliable)
ASUS are a least, but not Abit.
Stuff like sata drivers are easily slipstreamed in and memtest runs just as well from booitable CD.

I think in general they have done away with the floppy disc to early on pre built machines.
I get to help people online (friends) with PC problems, and on many occassions a floppy would have been handy.
Only yesterday one had problems that looked liked bad memory, and they struggle burning CDs from ISO's.
Then they get petrified in the BIOS changing the boot order.

No haven't used a floppy in my builds in years now just don't see the need for them do all my bios updates in windows or via usb.

The only time it might come in handy is for installing some raid drivers during windows install, but I haven't had a problem so far.

I have one mounted internally into my case, have to take the side off to use it.

Alu and plastic just do not go.

I jsy bought one as an 'extra' - its in the case but not plugged in - as it happens i might need it to do the BIOS as its not working from Windows.

I also have a card reader in there as well.

I have a floppy with a disk and cable in my cupboard, only plug it in to update the BIOS, otherwise it's not used.

1 drive serves all 4 machines here...

Not had a floppy drive in either of my last 2 builds. Not had any need for it in the most recent one. But in the one I built a few years back, I could have done with one for the SATA drives. Ended up having to swap in an old drive I had lying around.
