Miserable, beautiful songs

Still in love with you - Thin Lizzy

The man who sold the world - David Bowie

Hurt - Nine Inch Nails

My Immortal - Evanescence

Black - by a group that erm... rhymes with Pearl Jam :p

A Perfect Circle - Three Libras
A Perfect Circle - The Noose

Completely agreed! The Noose has just come up on shuffle and it is a stunning song!

Would have to add Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's Hurt, watching it with the video actually almost made me cry....sad as it sounds.

There are plenty of morrissey/smiths songs. What is the theme of the song you need? there will probably be a song to match it.

Not too sure about this one being miserable, but it certainly is beautiful.

Definately this one as well.

Got to love Thomas Newman. :)

Not the most miserable of tracks, but damn if they aren't slow, melodic and doomy.

Metallica - 'Fade to Black'
Metallica - 'Welcome Home (sanitarium)
Metallica - 'One'
Metallica - 'The Unforgiven'
Metallica - 'Nothing Else Matters'

waking ashford - hands on deck
Angels & Airwaves - breathe
Kisschasy - Black dress
Snow Patrol - set fire to the third bar
red jumpsuit apparatus - Your guardian angel
Yellowcard have a few good ones, seeing as they have a violinist

there just a few i can think of right now, they might not be to your taste but worth a listen if your bored :)

I feel duty bound to recommend some Manics:

Motorcyle Emptiness (on Generation Terrorists)
Life Becoming A Landslide (on Gold Against the Soul)

would recommend The Holy Bible but most of it is a bit dark tbh

other than that:

Idlewild - The Bronze Medal (100 Broken Windows)
Ocean Colour Scene - So Low (One From The Modern)
Ocean Colour Scene - The Circle, One for The Road, It's My Shadow, The Downstream (Moseley Shoals)
