Snowboarding This Season

the only reason i asked about the czech republic is i was in mlatkov in eastern czech republic in august and noticed they had ski slopes and lifts there. :) the czech people in general are lovely and respectful and it helps my gf doesnt live far from there. :D

Do you mean Makov?

My ex is from near Ostrava, near the Polish and Slovakian borders on the east, slightly smaller hills there but its cheap and suits me fine for a day out :)

Bring on the snow. I'll be up the lecht almost every day i'm not working, it's snowy and I am able - so about 4 days this winter...

And hopefully a latebreak sometime in early spring :)

Lets not bring up the ski/boarding argument again...

Everyone knows that boarding is the only way to get down the slope in style ;)

I'm a skiier but I can board down black runs, I know the advantges and disadvantages of both. There are days then I might prefer to take a board, but those days are slim... I also know when a board can be equal with skis (and vice versa).

But in the end there are somethings a snowborad just can't do. The primary example is ski mountaineering/touring/randonee. Splits boards exist but are far from ideal. Overall, You can undoubtedly have fun on a snowboard, and for those who dont get much slope time they can probably have more fun on board. But as a practical means of navigating a mountainside safely and efficiently (and by this I mean away form sliding down simple pistes and adventuring inot the mountains) they are left for dust. Skis have xisted for at least 10,000 years and the comcept of poles and 2 skis with the skiier facing forwards hasn't changed since the earliest known cave paintings. Old shool, maybe ,but like the crocodile it has existed because it is perfect for the intended purpose. And don't be fooled, the skiis of today are almost completely different in technique, performance and dynamics of 10 years ago, let alone 100, 1000 or 10,000 years ago. Ski designs got stuck in a rut through the 80s and early 90s. Technology rennovated them with the caving skis, snowborading influenced a whole swathe of fun stylish and dedicated skis for playing in the park, powder, big mountian skiing, skier cross.

In the end, all us skiers owe snowboarding a big thanks for reinovating the sport, getting many more people on the mountains, and introducing style to the mountainside. Look at the latest winter X-games. No one can say the skiiers aren't giving it.

Hourses for courses. I am glad there are many boarders supporting the ski resorts and enjoying the mountains. I am also reassured that many snowborders are switching to skis when they are proficient. A bug change form the end of the 90s/early 2000s when many intermediate skiers gave up and switched to boarding.

Bah you evil guys bringing this up, im banned by doctors from going next year after smashing my legs in a car crash, doesnt look like i will ever be able to do it again :(

Was in meribel in feb for the three valleys, that was incredible, next year my mates are off to val d' sere

Absolutely, there are times when I am on my board I wish I was skiing, I've done it a couple of times, just all of my friends are boarders and I enjoy it a lot, as I said in the previous thread I knew a guy who did both and he loved both for their individual strengths, personally after a few years of boarding I may take up skiing, but for the minute Im happy with boarding, but will definitely try skiing at some point, I do see the benefits :)

Lets hope everyone gets some good powder this season, was a bit hit and miss last year :(

Ouch :( my ex managed to break/sprain her ankle in Vermont last Xmas, then cracked a vertebrae in her back in March, she was off work for 3 months.

Im lucky I've not hurt myself at all in the 3 years I've been boarding, but I try and reign myself in when I think things are getting over my head, Im sure I will break something soon though.

Im sure you will be back on the slopes in a year or two, dont give up hope, alternatively just go for the apres ski  :)

Well i aint really had a good year, in meribel i broke 2 ribs and gave myself a lung infection after hitting ice at night snowboarding drunk. Then march the car crash. Hopefully will get the strenght back in my ankles to be allowed to ski again but think snowboard will be no no.

tbh im lucky to still have my leg so giving up snowboarding isnt a major deal, just annoying when it gets round to this time of year when folks are planning the holidays.

and for folks less squeemish this is my leg patched up after 14hrs of surgery and after giving permision trapped in the wreck to amputate (not really much options is there).

ohh harsh. Yeah I wouldn't snowboard after suffering a leg injury that bad, so much tension is put on the lower legs when snowboarding compared to skiing.

im off to canada for 10 days in feb :D with 4 mates drinking girls and boarding, its gonna be a crazy 10 days :D

I declare today the first day of winter. Here in Lausanne,Switzerland it didn't get above 6*C and the wind felt like it came straight form Siberia.

Plenty cold enouhg for snow down to the valleys, but it looks far too dry. Small possibility towards the end of the week warm moist air will collide with this cold dry air and create a massive dump somewhere. If that happens there could be skiing by the weekend.

I put the odds of me getting my first turns in next saturday at 5%. The long term forecast for the next 4 weeks also looks promising.
