Just about to buy a brand new Focus ST and have just checked what my insurance premium would be.

When looking last year it was £600ish and to my surprise it's now £433 (they much like it when you turn 30 :p)

When you select protected no claims, it jumps to £497.

This got me thinking, do they really work......so i modified the quote and put a fake claim in from 2 years ago.

The quote then jumped to £557......so much for protection?

Do you already currently have no claims protection (and at the point the fake accident would have occurred) and are just continuing your protected no claims policy or are you just wanting to start your protected no claims from now?

they protect your NCB

not that your quote will be exactly the same.

they never actually state they will either. its just about protecting your bonus

try putting that quote in again, but say minus 2 years NCB off, and see how much it would have saved you.

i've never made a claim in 10 years of driving......but i can't get my head round the protected no claims thing.

If you make a claim, they still nail you for it......but i guess it would stop you starting from 0NCB again?

but then what would you say you had if you changed insurers? could you say you'd made a claim last year but i've got 5 years no claims?

Protected No-claims is a no brainer for me. Get it if you can. I went 8 years without so much as a scratch then a couple of years ago I pranged a taxi, with protected no claims in play, I still have 10 years valid NCB, that I can still take anywhere.

The problem is, if you moved insurers, you still have to declare any accidents / thefts, even if they weren't your fault. So they'll still nail you.

However, I guess it's better to have 5 years NCB (for example) and 1 recent accident than to have 0 years NCB and 1 recent accident...

Agreed.

My experience is that I make a claim every 5 years or so - some of the previous ones not being my fault (theft etc). Protected NCB premium was less than losing 1 or 2 years NCB.

Nah,if I have to claim due to vandalism/hit and run etc. it's not my fault, they can't put it up just because I have to claim.

they can and they do

wh do you think your premium goes up even if you declare a no fault accident

how on earth are you more likely to crash when somebody has crashed into you ? admitted it and their insurance company paid for all your costs (excess included)

its daft, but they still do it.

The fact that insurers offer it as an additional cover should tell you that in the long run you lose out.
I only have 3 years NCB so protected no claims isnt an option for me but the premium hike seems quite steep.
Requote with 3 years NCB and your claim vs 5 years NCB and your claim and the difference probably isnt that much especially on cars which are cheap to insure.

As with all things it is a gamble, you could protect your no claims and it be worth it or you can throw money away for 5 years, finally make a claim and be worse off overall

MoreThan don't, there promise is "We won't raise your premium when you make a claim", I know other insurers do.

You seem to have fallen under their spell, if your car gets hit by someone who runs off, while it was parked in a sensible place.

They will declare you a higher risk, and on that bases raise/reduce by less your renewal quote. But it'll be because "your a higher risk", not because you made the claim. ;)

I'm sorry your wrong, they will not raise your premium because you have a claim, that's the whole point. MoreThan's premiums are not the cheapest due to this fact, I would rather pay slighly higher premiums but know that if I make claim I won't be penalized.

If they did raise your premiums then their statement "We won't raise your premium when you make a claim" woudl be fraudulent, when I took the policy out I asked about pretty much the scenario stated above.

just tried a quote with morethan......i've got 5+years no claims and no convictions for 5+years. 30years old and they can't provide me with a quote!

oh well.....looks like i'll stick with privilege for now.

I've found protected no-claims are worth it. Think I'd be on 2 years no claims now, rather than 6 had I not protected them.

I thought someone did some calculations and using averages on here once and the money you spend protecting your NCB is greater than the cost of having a crash and an increased premium?
