Anyone fed up of working in I.T?

I came from the building trade into IT.
I like it, what makes IT bad is people who have no idea what they are doing but they get away with it. Much like the building trade, therefore I think much like any job.

At least thats how I see it.

10 years for me, still like IT, it's the dumb ass senior management who have no clue of how to use IT that drives me up the world.

If I told you I worked on AS/400s (iSeries) and RPG/RPGLE with the the IBIS applications, you wouldn't have a clue what I was talking about :)

My first job was working on two AS/400s (one was the really one sick yellow colour that was the size of a small transit van - can't remember the model number anymore) and the other was one of the black style ones (again can't remember the model number). RPG and some god forsaken program called MACPAC.

Glad to see the back of those!

Well, actually, I could use one about now to de-orbit onto a few select people. :D

Its just driving me nuts, I mean its not a boring job I configure all manner of complex network stuff for some of the UKs biggest businesses, its just I can't take much more sitting down for 8 hours + commute. its so unhealthy and some of the people who work here are just utter morons..

There will always be users, that's why we have "IT humour". ;)

Sadly some people have no interest at all in knowing anything about the PCs they use so you will always be needed somewhere. November will be my 10th year in IT and sometimes it does feel like a prison sentence but I bet there are a lot more stressful jobs out there. :)

I don't think I am fed up of IT but I am fed up of the company I work for. The main problems I am experiencing at the moment are constant promises of training/being told they don't pay well but make up for it in training and then the training never materialises, people from the team leaving then having to pick up twice/three times as much work (they then expect you to just deal with it!). Also people in other teams that blame everything on your systems when they have no idea how it works, fortunately one of the network engineers has some sense and looks into things before jumping to decisions....

I could go on and on but people will think I am just moaning :p

I can see where you are coming from in that statement ;)

My problem is that when I become bored with something it takes over pretty quickly and I can't stand it within a month, its been building up for a while now.. its not the job or the customer networks we design/implement its just the fact that im getting sick of Cisco/networks stuff and sitting down all day, I feel unhealthy and as though im wasting away..

Care to name me a popular mainstream career that people DON'T get sick of after years? Funny how IT seems to get picked on, when there are a lot of people in a lot of fields all thinking the same thing. :)

I agree totally.. Its just sometimes I guess I get into a ranting mood

You see IT getting picked on because most people who work in it also browse internet forums.

IT is a boring industry, but only if you stick in the same job. Go contracting, earn loads of money and never stay in the same job long enough to get bored.

IT also has the bonus of allowing you to work anywhere in the world with next to no hassle.

I get paid well into the high earners bracket but sometimes I just wish I was outside cutting grass all day or picking up litter or something..

I know how you feel some days, but as with every job you will probably end up in the same boat of wishing you were doing something else.

Before IT i used to work in a number of jobs, the first of which was Lanscaping/Tree Surgery/Gardening, and yes, it was a great job in the summer months, but during winter dragging yourself up in the early hours, going out into a freezing cold morning, trudging through muddy gardens/building sites (wasn't too bad for me, i had a nice warm machine to sit indoing the landscaping whilst my mates were out in the rain with the shovels and spades), getting sopping wet through roped into a tree 40ft up with the wind blowing you to and fro, it got to be a bind also. Tried working in retail, that ended up the same way after a number of years.

The grass is always greener.

It used to be loads of fun, but outsourcing and heavy middle management is sucking the life out of it. I spend my day creating accounts for Indians who will probably end up taking over the jobs of English folk who have worked for the company for years, the joys of "making the business profitable again". There's no loyalty in this industry, which seems to be driven by bull.... bingo spouting halfwits who are more interested in their "strong cultural fits", getting "ducks in a row" and "touching base".

Back when I started in desktop support when lunchtimes were lengthy, the company I worked for was a laugh, people smiled and money was meagre... thems were the days.

Sadly, you go chasing cash in this industry you better be prepared to put up with some misery. On the upside, it does wonders for reigniting that Friday feeling! :D

When I turned 19 I had been working in IT for almost 4 years and I was sick of it already. Working ridiculously long hours for a pittance and getting no thanks for it. In order to progress any further I'd have had to spend three or four years getting a degree and then join the rat race to get a job again.

I hated the prospect of working in the industry any longer and jacked it in. It's the best decision I ever made. I'm earning more than I could have ever imagined at my age, I work about half the hours, I get about 3 times more holiday and I now enjoy what I do.

Unless you are willing to put a lot of time, effort and money into getting yourself suitably qualified and experienced, you'll go nowhere far in the IT industry. (There are a few exceptions of course).

Yes I am sick of it!

Everyday day is the same and I feel like I get nothing done and nothing I do makes a deference anyway so why should I bother!!!

;(

To be fair its not where I am thats the problem in terms of rank, it doesn't get any higher technically within the business than me.. I earn a good wage and get plenty of cash.. I've spent so much money on and time studying on qualifications including CCIE, and other stuff.. I'm just not happy with it and want to do something else..

I did forget to mention that it is also incredibly boring and soul destroying.:)

My first boss in IT told me some golden advice over the first beer he bought me:

"Support is a thankless job, don't expect any recognition for anything. Soon as you get your head around that, mine's a Pride."

Never forgot it, still the truest thing I've heard about IT to this day.
