Hmm ok. We just had a health and safety person come round work and tell us that we were all going to cripple ourselves in ten years' time if we don't sit and type better. I have to say I agreed with everything she said [whilst trying not to stare down her cleavage] and the following pointers were quite useful:

- the top of the computer monitor should always be at eye level
- the keyboard should be very close to you but not directly underneath
- mouse should be close to you and right next to the keyboard
- Chair should be at the correct height so that your elbows are at the same level as the desk or slightly above to prevent carpal tunnel
- when resting between typing, rest your wrists on their sides, not with palms down
- back of chair should support the S of your spine
- don't slouch and make sure you are not hunched over your keyboard, slouching will lead to muscular problems

That's all for now! Some of it is common sense but seeing as most of us here spend a lot of time on the PC I thought it would be useful.

good post, i got awfull head aches till i moved my computer screen up a bit.
Still have awfull posture on the chair though, did she give you more info on that

Computer health and safety whats that??

the only health and safety i had was at college where we just singed a sheet of paper.. never heard of it since :p

You mean you sit badly on your chair? It'll be easier to sit better if the monitor and keyboard etc are in the right position.

It depends what kind of chair you have. If you have an office swivel chair, make sure it isn't angled forward. If there are arms, dont rest on them while you type. Sit up straight and quite far back in the chair and make sure your shoulders are straight. The headaches probably come from the fact that your neck isn't straight either so don't hunch and make sure your shoulders are level. Also make sure your feet are straight and flatly on the floor.

See how much I learned :p

It's too late for me! But, the rest of you can make the journey to the other side!

Seriously though, it's kinda weird how I naturally did a few of these things. :)

Our H&S guy wants us to show people how to sit on a chair in the IT induction, apart from feeling and looking like a tit the company has no legal obligation then to tell people how to position themselves. Only that we ensure the necessary procedures of proper light and desk space.

Anybody here have a similar system in their office?
