right ho there this is the question.

I currently have my media centre running a 9800pro with a 3500+ xp athlon with 2gb ram,shuttle sn41g2
and it has a slight stutter when showing panning shots. would upgradeing to a card with purevideo help(so nvidea) (looking at 7600gs silent if it helps)

If you're looking at a new HTPC card I'd get a Nvidia 8500/8600 or ATI 2400/2600. They have HD video acceleration, might as well get a card with that now.

Your computer should be able to cope with SD scaling to 1080p, and 720p. 1080p native video will struggle though.

Dont forget at the moment its only HDDVD/BluRay decoding that works as advertised. Playing back x264 in an mkv container (as most downloaded content usually is) at this point in time has a 20fps or black screen bug. No fix thus for for it :(

Didn't know that as hadn't looked into it before!

Is this 'bug' likely to be fixed? Any info if any series of cards aren't affected by it?

Not much news at this point in time. It doesnt seem to be the cards that are the issue more so the mkv container. There are reports that demuxing to an AVI container works perfectly. Its an option that works but remuxing is hardly an ideal solution. I am watching the situation every day as its something I bought my 2400PRO specifically for (P4 3ghz isnt the best at decoding HD).

Works fine on a 6800XT SLI with an X2 4400+, X2 4200+ with 7600GT sli and on my rig with an X1900GT and the 8800.

Try a dual core, it should help, my CPU runs at about 30-40% load when playing HD stuff.

Should have been more specific I suppose, I was talking explicitly about DXVA2 (UVD, PureVideo2)
