Hi guys, i'm thinking of getting a laptop to use as a media player for when i'm on the move, and ideally i would like one that can play back 720p videos downloaded from the web. There seems to be a few different types of file formats and codecs being used. Some i think are more spec hungry than others, but assume i want to be able to play them all. Thanks guys. Hope this in the right place.

Sorry, dim moment... So the point in the thread, is what spec laptop would i need to play 720p video files? I tried on a friends turion laptop, not sure of the spec, but i really struggled. The file was on a rather slow usb pen drive, and could have been down to the media player he uses, or the codecs installed. Any suggestions guys? Thanks.

Thanks, i was thinking of getting one second hand or something, could someone suggest a spec? Also, can you get car chargers / PSU for laptops these days? Thanks guys

define "basic"

Something like this

Intel Core 2 Duo T5500, 15.4" TFT screen,
1024MB Memory,
80GB Hard Disk Drive,
DVD Super-Multi,
Shared graphics,
WiFi,
5 in 1 Card Reader,
Windows Vista Premium
£399.99 delivered

Could even go lower on the spec, it all about having the right codecs.

My laptop, a Core (1) Duo @ 1.6 Ghz with 1 GiB RAM and an X1300 with shared video memory plays 720p .mkv files encoded with H.264 and AAC without breaking a sweat.

Yes, it all depends at what bitrate your 720p files are done in.

I have a Core 2 Duo, 2GHz, 4MB cache processor in my laptop. It can play 720p/1080p MPEG-2 files up to 20-odd Mbits fine but put a 720p H.264 file anywhere near it and it chokes.

Something is wrong with your laptop then. Because my athlon xp 2600+ could play those.

Depends on the codec being used. Its widely known that CoreAVC is the most "efficient" codec but also the cruddiest. Picture Quality and Artifacting are known problems with CoreAVC. FFDSHOW needs a LOT more grunt but is heralded as the best codec for x/h264 playback.

I was using ffdshow. I'm hardly going to pay for a decoder. Also my 3500+ played 1080p.
