Neighbour painted my fence panel on his side - is it worth it?

You should be glad it's only paint, me and the dad looked out into the back garden the other day and saw two builders and a big hole where one of the fence panels and posts was. They were just about to drive a mini digger onto our lawn when my dad had a word with them.

Turns out the next door neighbor was replacing a wonky fence post but the first thing we knew was when we spotted the builders stood in our flower beds, luckily the plants had been dug up for winter a few days earlier.

Just repaint your side to cover up what has soaked through. Not rocket science

It's already protected with a clear protector. What isn't rocket science is the fact that I can't repaint a fence to cover up an orange smudge when the fence has never been painted in the first place.

He's painted his side of the fence, what difference does it make?
I've never has an issue with anybody painting their side of the fence whatever the hell colour they like and neither have my neighbours when I've done it to them.

People are so petty and small minded and stupid.

Because the orange stain has seeped through to my side and it leaks down my side. Or did your concentration waiver before you got that far?;) Will take some pictures in the light tomorrow.

If you've already got a clear coat on your side, then the orange muck should come off quite easily. Most of the rubbish on sale now is waterbased so doesn't penetrate very well (bloody slugs eat the stain off my fence :( )

If you were not lazy, your side would already be stained, and properly maintained, (the fence panels are facing the wrong way by the sounds of it, your fence, your problem) and him painting his side would not be an issue.
Maintaining the boundry by the way means you are responsible for painting his side.

Go spend £15 and maintain your shabby fence, it will do wonders for the resale value of your house while showing potential buyers you are not a bone idle layabout who hasnt cut corners on maintaining his property.

Cheeky git.

Although it would annoy me, I would probably leave it. Worth souring the relationship over? Probably not mate.

but I'm still considering going through small claims to get the panels replaced with ones that don't have orange crud all over them.

That would do more harm to selling your property than a few stains on the fencing. Yopu would have to declare on your paperwork you was in or are in dispute with a neighbour.

What I would then do if a neighbour did that to me is carefully break a few fence panels while you was out and then say " Hey your boundary is broken, please can you fix it" ;)

If your selling I really wouldn't worry, no one will care.

I am confused. He has painted the side of the fence on his side. This fence lies on the border of your property so surely he can? Anyway, rather than get all keyboard warrior mode just talk to him.

Our neighbour put a fence up on the boundary and the nice chap creosoted our side for free. What a top bloke!

If you are selling don't worry about a bit of seepage in the border fences just paint the inside of your house mangnolia,,, :D

have you actually spoke to the guy? he may not have realised the impact on the other side of the fence as i'm guessing (and hoping) he maybe doesn't go in your garden much.

if he apologises, ask him if he has anything left to finish the job he started ;)

As far as I know most people completely ignore any law on what boundary belongs to whom, because it's silly, and like good neighbours share the cost of any fence 50/50.

You're clearly not the sharpest splinter in the fence panel, so I'll break it down for you.

My fence is maintained, looks good, and is very tidy, or was should I say. I am certainly not lazy, I just don't like the look of fences that looked like they've been sprayed with orange tango. I protected it which is just as much effort, so I don't see how protecting it = lazy and staining it = not lazy. In my very humble opinion, stained fence = chav, natural look = classic and smart.

Maintaining a boundary means keeping a fence there. It doesn't have to be stained, PMSL :D

The problem with that is that it becomes a joint boundary in the deeds and you effectively lose property space. Also, any repairs in the future will have to be made jointly. So this is extremely unwise. Property deeds aren't just for fun you know.

No, nice guy = nice guy.

You're blowing this way out of proportion and making yourself appear to be a rather unpleasant, selfish and intolerant chap with the way you want to handle it. I don't know you so can't comment on how accurate your current portrayal of yourself is to how you actually are, it can only be called as it's seen...

To be fair mate with an attititude like that you're clearly a bit of an arse arse, and a petty one to boot, I think few in this thread would dsagree. Ppersonally if I were your neighbour and knew you'd got in this state over something like this without doing what normal people do and talking to me first about it i'd genuinely laugh at you in person.

Victor Meldrew, anyone? :D

While techncially you maybe righ,t is it worth it? Its his side of the fence after all.

Honestly, i wouldn't even say anything at all its just not worth the hassle over something so small and petty.
If its easily fixable then fix it yourself.

Once one of our neighbours went onto our land and cut down our trees (his son is a logger or something and wanted the wood) mum was furious and we no longer speak to them.
The other neighbour was pruning some ivory at the top of the broder betwene our hoses (the ivy was really completly on their side) and accidentally cut a bit of our phone wire. he immediately came and apologised and offered to pay for it.
Be polite with your neighbours, if its something small like that then really don't bother with it as the hassle it will create will not be worth it
