Neighbour painted my fence panel on his side - is it worth it?

Why don't you invite an estate agent around and ask him how much your neighbour has devalued your property. no one here will be able to judge without pictures.

Mountain and molehill come to mind though.

Not that simple. Firstly, natural wood looks better imo than stain. Everyone round here has a nice natural looking treated panelling but this person has to listen to the cheesy marketing on channel 5 and stain it a nasty orange. Secondly, I can't stain all sides as I don't own all sides - therefore I'd have one side a different colour.

In that case, is there no way you can remove the stain thats come onto your side? Keep yours how you want it, let him have his how he wants it?

If it's natural wood with no artificial colouring/staining then a light sanding should remove areas where he's gone over.

As per the first post in this thread, the fence is on my property and owned by me, as confirmed by the house deeds.

So, fundamentally, you are in a selfishness issue with your neighbour...

Question is, does your selfishness override his? You'd have to seek legal advice to determine whether you can dictate what he can see on his side of the fence or not...

then hes commited criminal damage which you could take further if you wished too no matter what anyone says. he had to of had permission by you, which he didnt so hes in the wrong....but if you get along with your neighbours, most dont mind what they do

He can dictate, as it's his fence. However a court would laugh him out. Unless he has tried to sort it out. But I agree he's being rather silly. Just ask them to sort out the seepage.

As if the polcie would take an interest. As I said a small claims court he would get laughed at, due to not trying to solve the problem.

Not if it's yours and you are the one that is meant to maintain it, and the neighbour hasn't asked/been granted permission to do so.

As far as I was aware you can cut any bits that cross onto your side of the boundary, provided you give them to the hedges owner (lol, because I'd really want them back if it was mine  ).

As to the OP I think sueing for the sake of some paint runs, which he probably isn't even aware of is a lot OTT (some people are a bit inept when it comes to DIY :D ). It depends on how you get on with your neighbour as to your next step, personally I'd just let it go, hardly something to get worked up over.

You are right, the police would tell me to get lost.

With respect to the small claims court, I would never just go down this route serve without attempting to get them to rectify it (should I decide to take this further).

Well anyway thanks for all the advice, it honestly is appreciated. The first thing I'm going to do is sleep on it and see if I'm as angry after a good rest.

Just repaint your side to cover up what has soaked through. Not rocket science

Neighbour wars just ain't worth it.

If anything you should be thanking him as it's going to protect your fence... coating just one side isn't going to protect it at all.

Mountain + Molehill Robbie, just speak to them, if you arent happy about it, please do not go to the courts, only do so as a last resort. Its ridiculous to go so far over such a small matter - I assume they didnt know it was your fence so to speak. If the seepage that bad? Is there no way of recifying it - is just planeing off some of the paint? Is there that much? There is nothing worse than a petty neighbour, I hope that isnt you.

exactly, you spend most of you life in your house. A neighbour war is not good. Somethings like noise is very hard to deal with even by using new laws.

either just paint your side or sand it back. Or ask him to fix the problem areas. Good choice to sleep on it.

He's
painted
my
fence

That's illegal. And if you're stupid enough to paint my fence, then yes - you would hate to have me as a neighbour.

He's painted his side of the fence, what difference does it make?
I've never has an issue with anybody painting their side of the fence whatever the hell colour they like and neither have my neighbours when I've done it to them.

People are so petty and small minded and stupid.

i agree with you if im honest.....an ass of a neighbour will put more buyers off than a bit of seaped paint...

Dead right!
If someone tried to sue me because some paint seeped through a fence (especially if they didn't try to sort it out with me first!) they'd soon learn what living next to an awkward git was like :D.
