GTHD - MASSIVELY overrated

So, with the new price cuts I finally grabbed a PS3. Pretty happy with it so far, nice piece of kit.

I noticed GT:HD was still on the store, so I grabbed it.

What a letdown! I honestly had to check to see if I had my screen res set properly. It looks so drab and flat graphically. Here's the kicker: I demoed it to 3 people, 2 gamers and 1 not (the Mrs). I switched inputs between GT:HD and PGR3. Unanimous impression was that PGR3 was better graphically. I know gameplay is all, and it does handle nicely, but on all the boards I've heard how it blows everything else away graphically, and it's totally untrue.

Before anyone accuses me of Sony bashing - nothing could be further from the truth. I fired up the Motorstorm demo and was very impressed.

So what's with the GT worship? Is it blinkers for a beloved franchise?

PS - I have no doubt that the upcoming full game (Prologue?) will be much better.

Hmm, that sucks. I haven't downloaded it yet, saw it on the store, but have been too busy with F1. Did have time to grab the lemmings demo for some retro fun!

Graphically I thought it was very good but I didn't like playing it much. PGR3 is a lot better. The best graphics I've seen upto now on any racing game is F1, it looks awesome on a 46" lcd @ 1080p :D

As far as I was aware GT:HD was put out as nothing other than a quick wee bonus game that they could make quickly & easily, really don't think they were meaning it to be any sort of showcase for the graphics since it's just GT4 in a higher resolution. Comparing one track and a few cars to PGR is a bit of a reach.

GT:HD is a FREE demo, which came out maybe 12 months ago.

Im not sure who was orgying over it but it has better physics than the GT before it.

Not sure who said it has the best ever graphics, but they are the best GT graphics in any release to Date.

Prologue is coming out before Christmas, i think you should wait for that before casting judgement on the GT Franchise.

I think this is the point.

Not just is it free, but it's pretty old now.
I expect at the time of release, it looked good compared to other games of the time. Also was the first game I saw running at a constant 60fps whilst rendering at 1080p.

V1N.

Exactly as Nickg said - did you clarify to the people you demo'd too that GT:HD was always free compared to shelling out £30-40 for PGR3?

I also found PGR3 initially great - but just boring after a while, I got through 3 or 4 leagues and just stopped playing because it was too similar

Gotta admit, I've not seen or played this yet, Not the biggest racing fan if I'm honest.

But as a golden rule If it's dated, You'll be disappointed if late to the party.

I'm sorry my friend - but GTHD is just a plain old GT engine with hi-res graphics. It's not meant to be a showcase, it's not even meant to be a proper game, it's dated and it's free.

How come you didn't know all of this beforehand ?.

I was probably the leader of the marching squad against it. I thought it looked poor and played incredibly slowly.

However, the actual modelling of the cars was fantastic.

F1 is great, though only runs at 720p?
Does on mine anyway!

The best graphics in a console racing game at this point though, has to go to DiRT (IMO of course)

V1N.

I think the potential is there, as said its old now, i'd love to see what they are going to do to improve on it, I expect the final release will look a LOT better.

not too long ago there was a thread where basically, a load of people were literally whacking off over it and posting comments of how awesome the graphics were. i think thats where the OP was coming from

If people liked it then thats fine, this guy has a different opinion - no big deal there really.

Totally agree with the OP. Coming from GT4 on PS2 I suppose it'll look good, but it doesn't really compare to some of the full games out there like PGR3, DiRT and Forza. Of course the comments that it's only an old tech demo are completely justified (as that's what it is), but it still doesn't stop some people thinking it's awesome and the best graphics ever because it's GT/PS3. GT5 is certainly looking impressive...well, once I see some actual complete game footage instead of renders and replays that is :D

I have no doubt that GT5 will *look* superb, and be the best looking racing game ever..

However, they've spent so much time developing it, and are using every trick in the book to make it look good as Polyphony are so good at, it doesn't matter to most if it doesn't have realtime reflections/shadows to the nth degree, no-one will be able to tell..

This is one thing that bothers me with Forza and even PGR4 to some extent, I think for once they need to look at how PD make things look so nice, people don't give 2 hoots about 'realtime' reflections/shadowing if the res/framerate/AA suffers due to this, approximations that appear realtime but maintain these more desirable features are seen as better by almost everyone..

I just hope that the physics and gameplay are there, GT:HD's physics are so bad it's criminal.. saying that, I notice the interviews stating a really advanced physics mode, so things are potentially looking up..
