Hey all,
Got a photography workshop over the weekend - In The Company of Wolves (Wild Arena).
Has anyone got any tips/suggestions before I go?
(Apart from take as many photos as you can ;))

This is my first workshop, can’t wait!

Thanks!

i dont even know what a photography worshop is? :(
is that the same as a intense short course?
or a group of photographers weekend out?

anyway.
think you know what you need to do :P

well allready you said the main part. "take as many photo's as you can"

make sure you take all ya equipment, tripods, batterys, flashes, lenses,
make sure you are all charged up with batterys.

check the weather reports so you know what kind of weather your dealing with.

Its a photographers day out thingy. You get right up close to the wolves.
I unfortunately don't have a flash (probably could borrow my friends if need be). I got a fairly good selection of equipment (400D, 17-40mm f/4 L, 50mm f/1.4, 70-300mm f/4 L).
Weather is looking OK at the moment.

You just reminded me to buy some (extra) AA batterys for the batt pack, thanks! :)

  • Use AF-C (constant autofocus i think it is, the one where it constantly tracks and changes focus as the subject moves).
  • Never shoot at less than 1/focal length. If you're zoomed in at 300mm dont let the shutter speed drop below 1/300th. Adjust your aperture/ISO to let you do this.
  • Focus on the eyes.
  • Check your histograms every few shots if you have time. If it looks good, carry on. Checking your histogram gives you a better idea if you're shots are actually gonna come out well, rather than just looking at them on the tiny display.
  • I might be wrong but i'd try spot or centre-weighted metering. Some of the more prominent wildlife togs here will give a better idea i'm sure.

The camera has a AF mode called AI Focus AF which is intended for 'subjects moving unpredictably, such as animals.'
