Xbox 360 is almost 2 years old...How has it aged?

Holding up very well I guess.

I haven't touched a single game on my PC since I bought it last October.

Xbox live is great fun, especially as they continue to come up with no features, like seen in Halo 3.

We haven't even started to get the real good games yet. I've not looked back since leaving stale pc gaming for the 360. I've played heaps of top games and enjoyed them all, yet even now it's clear the developers have a lot to learn about the hardware.

Still on my launch day rig here.

The thing that i seriously hate about owning an xbox is the fact that i know its going to die sometime...I seriously, seriously dont like that...

Wait, what?
What's the killer app?
Take your pick, but statistics would say it's Halo3 which smashed records left right and center.

The PS3 will get GT5, but that's no bigger realease than Halo3 (I'd say it's smaller) and I personally think PGR trounces GT.

I have to say, If Halo 3 is the killer App on the 360, Then i'm highly underwhelmed. Takes all sorts though, And just because i didn't think it was that amazing, That Doesn't mean other don't love it.

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't. My Xbox360 has probably had ~5000 hours of usage through watching DVD's, games or plain downloading and it's still going.
All things die that are electrical. Only this morning my z5500 speakers went, thankfully it was only a 2amp time-delayed fuse that needed replacing.

I would say 2010 the new one will be out and within a year MS will stop supporting releasing stuff for the old one. This is based on their history of killing support for old products soon after new ones are released. So I would say 2011 will be the 360's final year.

Yeah, I agree we'll see the new one in 2010 but I don't think they'll kill off the 360 straight away like they did with Xbox 1. By that time, 360 will be very much in profit so to stop that income and start taking losses on a new model might be a bit mad. (Unless the 360 is being thrashed by the PS3 and sales have dried up by that time.)

Can you gurantee the same when games come out that fully utilise the hardware. For example throughout the ps1 and ps2 lifecycle they used their "performance analyzer" to squeeze more and more out of the cpu and gpus. This didn't lead to the really intensive games (GT2 for ps1 or GT4 for ps2 as examples) breaking the consoles.

I think this is a very potentially serious issue for the 360 (as overheating is the biggest problem, I would imagine) When all 3 cores are used to the max there will be trouble. I think Dead Rising was the first game that used all 3 (or 2?) cores at once and I recall many consoles dying at that time, Assuming half the power is untapped at this point in the life cycle I am genuinely concerned what will happen towards the end.

All speculation at the moment, of course.

Never understood the people that worry about things breaking down, MS has a good warranty on the issue, sure I would be annoyed to go without my 360 for a month if that while it was getting fixed, but I would not worry myself about it happening, I wonder if these people worry their car tyres are wearing down too much from driving, of if their battery is getting closer to death with every start up, just don't get it.

Anyway 360 can still impress me, don't really bother with PC gaming now other than driving sims, which do tend to look rather good these days but not massively so compared to the 360 :)

I think you have misunderstood/misread my post. I am predicting what will happen to the early adopters in about a year when games start to really push the console and their warranties (mine) have run out.

I think games are probably already pushing it to the max, sure they might find better ways to optimise things and get better results from the same power but to think it still has another 33% to give is not likely IMO.

I couldn't guarantee anything. It's just as possible that my Xbox360 could die from me dropping it as it is a game killing it at the moment, but what I can say is that my Xbox360 has been absolutely punished over 2 years and it's still going incredibly well. Even more impressive is that it's a launch console.

I've had more reliable Xbox360's than I have any other home console is all I can say (though my Wii hasn't broken, it's only had ~5 hours play).

There is a warranty that you would expect on any product. Then there is an extended warranty that one can buy for a piece of mind. Then there is an extented extented warranty on offer for MS that says: yes, the 360 is pretty likely to fail at some point soon, we will fix at at no cost to you. Fine, if you forget that the replacement is likely to fail and the long downtime. Plenty to complain about.

I bought the original playstion at launch. The lazer broke within 2 weeks. I had a replacement 3 days later. The replacement last for years and my case was a rare one. Do u hear of that service or reliability with the 360? No!

I went from a PS1, to an Xbox, went to but a 360, but got a PS3 for £300 instead! I'm glad I did now!

Not really, if it fails you will get your machine back with the new heatsinks and cooling, so to say it will fail again is not really the case these days, they have addressed the issue and are willing to fix the older consoles out of good faith.

That makes no sense. You're saying that if you take away Microsofts 3 years warrenty then you have a right to complain. But the warrenty IS there and it's there for everybody.

If you want to talk consoles and failures I'm happy to. I had 4 Sony Playstations, 2 went with laser failure and another packed in. I had 2 Playstation2's, first one died within 15 minutes from laser failure. I've had 2 Playstation3's, it had a dodgy Blu-Ray drive.

However... I'm still on my launch Xbox360.. odd that.
It would also appear your 'rare' case of a Sony laser failure actually isn't that rare at all.

But thankfully IF my Xbox360 goes, or my PS3 goes again I have warrenties that were free and they ARE there to cover me. So what do I have to complain about? nothing.

I got my PS1 when i was 8 and raped it non solid until i got a PS2.

My PS2 was also thoroughly raped.

Neither of them broke!

I remember some people having laser problems with the ps1, but not to the catastrophic degree of xbox360.

TBH, with the ps1 and ps2 you were just unlucky. But its paid off with the xbox!

I know 1 thing, i bet Sony ain't liking this round and i believe they will not like MS having a new machine out in 2/3yrs time when they either got to stick with the PS3 or upset a lot of PS3 owners and actually bring out a new cosnole rather than a jack of all trades. this is where MS is going to be hurting Sony the most
