Just sold my house so I'm flush with cash to buy a decent watch. I am currently looking at the Tag Monaco model but does anyone have any other recommendations in the same price range ?

That depends - how much are you willing to spend on the Tag?

TBH you can't be that flush if all you're doing is looking at a fashion watch ;)

Well I'm going to spend a few 000's but obviously I don't want to go too mad.

And is there a difference between a fashion watch and others? I'm not sailing around the world of anything (flying and driving mostly :D) but I need one which will last me

I know where there will probably be a near new Omega Planet Ocean ( full size ) coming up shortly for about £1100

what Gilly means by "fashion watch" is that Tag are not a swiss watchmaker as such, components are bought in fromexternal sources, the assembly subcontracted ( often to Asia ) and they are packed in Switzerland to allow then to be called "swiss made"

To add to that, Heuer made watches for Abercrombie & Fisch :D

Weren't they also bought out by Louis Vitton?

I'd go for a nice Rolex too, very classic, so it will still look good in 20 years time. Which iis quite important if you're spending a few K on a watch.

You could pick up a nice Rolex Explorer with your budget I think. Though the design is VERY different from the one you are currently looking at, so it may not be your thing.

Depends what makes you happy, if the guy likes nice watches, why not! Me I don't like cars, so I drive a crappy old 106, but I love nice watches. Depends what floats your boat I guess.

In general, most of the stuff we buy is overpriced and not needed.

Louis Vuitton are part of the LVMH group ( LV , Moet and Hennessey ) , they own Tag , Zenith and a few other watch brands

Many watchmakers are part of larger groups , Richmeont own many high end watchmakers inc JLC, VC, IWC,Lange, Cartier and Panerai

3 of those are considered to be among the top 5 watchmakers

A base explorer wouldn't be my choice, very small by current trends , maybe a ND Sub , can you be a bit more precise re your budget ?

The base explorer is indeed quite small compared to many of the newer designs. I think you have to careful with some of the new larger watches though , if you are lightly framed of have small hands/wrists I think they can look a bit odd, just too loud. But if all comes down to personal taste.

That rolex is very nice. Going to have a look at some tomorrow now at the trafford centre.

The problem I've having with most watches is the depth of them. I want/need a thinner watch so it comfortably fits under shirts and such. Also getting one I didn't have to wind would be a benefit.

I mentioned that TAG watch because I think it looks very nice and I generally don't here bad things about them (until now that it is :D). Guess I'll have to have a look around the shop and see whats on offer

EDIT:

Oh and if anyone can tell me where I can go to look at rolex's it would be appreciated

you won't have much chance of seeing any of the popular models ( Stainless versions of Sub, Seadweller, Daytona, GMT ) in the dealers

best thing is to see if they have the half gold or gold models and get a feel for what you want

Thats the main reason I wasn't looking at the rolex watches. The only ones I've ever seen in the flesh and the gold ones and I think they don't particulary look nice.

Do I need to find a specialist Rolex dealer if I want to see the Sub then ?
