Convince me to get a PS3

You've said this a few times but I think it's a daft point to make. With having a lot of good games at once you've got a variety of games to pick from. Having that variety stops you playing a game so much it becomes boring (which can happen to even the best of games). Having a break and playing something else can really extend the lifespan of a title as you often go back to it a month or two later and remember just how good it is.

The PS3 has enough decent games to keep a newcomer very busy - it does me just fine - so not so daft eh ?.

I still think it's a very silly thing to say. A wider range of games is better than a limited one as it caters for a wider variety of preferences.

Variety is the 360's weakness. Ask someones what the top 360 games are chances are they will be: Halo, Gears and Bioshock. All 3 are shooters and thats says a lot about who xbox is targeted to. PS3 seems like it will do a much better job with other genres. Especially in 2008.

Sony have much more success with variety of games compared to Nintendo and MS

When they were selling lots of systems, yes. So far we've had the PS3 for a year and the 360 offers far more variety. I wouldn't give them the edge with racing games either. Not with Forza 2 and PGR 4 released so recently and more on the way.

We're pretty much half way through this generation now - with 2-3 years left Sony have to pull their finger out now.

maybe "decent" 5-6/10 games but it has NO 9/10 games at all.

Resistance is wildly overrated, as it motorstorm.

Heavenly sword is only a 6.

I say roll on MGS 4, White Knight, and FF13. Only then, will there be any kind of question

thats a fair point.

In that case, why not pick up the 40gb version for £299?

this has probably already been mentioned but remember, you wont have 40gb (or even 60gb) to play with.

Mine is the 60gb version and i have around 46gb free on the HDD. So on a 40gb PS3 your talking about 28 ish gig or so thats free.

Oh please.

Variety is the weakness? I bet you weren't saying that when you had your ps2.

Bioshock, Halo, Gears yes they are all shooters in some shape or form, so what?

Where exactly are the games on PS3 that are anywhere near that calibre regardless of genre?

Well, unlike the poster a few up, I just played on the Ratchet and Clank demo for the first time.

I have to say, if I'd not played on a PS3 before, that would've persuaded me.

Furthermore, it is of course horses for courses.
People saying Motorstorm and Resistance not being much cop.

Yep, they were launch titles, and I still enjoy a go on them now, I (still) think they're brilliant.

Anyway, I'm off to pre-order R&C from somewhere now :)

V1N.

Yeah i've got the 60gig too, but i've only used about 4gb (41gb remaining).

It sounds like OP just wants it for the odd taz, i don't think hes going to need the extra 20gb really. But if you can afford it get the 60gb because of bc

Just played it myself, very awesome, a bit linear compared to previous ratchet games. I won't buy it unless it reviews well, just because there is so much stuff coming out. I'll probably lovefilm rent it though.

So far yes 360 has more variety simply due do it being out much longer but you would be daft to suggest 360 will end with the best variety. Racing games being a great example. Sony have much more variety interms of racing from Wipeout and Motorstorm to GT and WRC. They cover the spectrum much better.

We're pretty much half way through this generation now - with 2-3 years left Sony have to pull their finger out now.

Doesnt mean Wii and PS3 are half way through. Also PS1/PS2 are the benchmark to aim for interms of variety and so far MS are struggling badly against that. They need to badly diversify their content. Rare havent exactly delivered on that and they cant alone.

You really are a crazed fanboy aren't you. Stop arguing, get both.

Are you telling me just because of some insane loyalty to a CORPORATION you're willing to run around and convince yourself and others not to experience the following; Gears of War, Halo 3, Too Human, Mass Effect, Fable 2, Lost Oddyssey, Bioshock, Splinter Cell Conviction, Dead Rising, Ninja Gaiden 2, etc.

On the converse, stop trying to convince yourselves that people should make do without Metal Gear 4, Final Fantasy 13, Kingdom Hearts 3, Team ICO's next project, White Knight, etc.

If you can get one console only, then without question it should be the 360, due to the lineup over the past 12 and next 12 months, the live integration (it has to be experienced), and platform as a whole.

But really you're better off buying a 360 now (premium can be had for £200 with a game), and watch the ps3 fall in price as it scrambles for market share and pick one up for £250 with a game (likely MGS4)in easter.

Heavenly Sword is easily 9 out of 10 its a class act.

I cant think of a similar fighting game which beats it.

Motorstorm is very good game. I'd give it 7 or 8 out of 10
Warhawk is at least 8 or 9/10 according to reviews and people raving about it here and elsewhere.

I agree though ps3 games are thin on the ground compared to the xbox360

games im getting shortly on ps3

Virtua Tennis 3
Oblivion GOTY
Fight Night 3 (rent prolly)
Ninja Gaiden Sigma (maybes)

I'm looking forward to these games coming soon to PS3 (ie before Xmas)

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
Assassins Creed
HAZE
Time Crisis 4!!!!! :D (i hope it arrives before xmas anyway)
Tekken 6
Timeshift
BeoWulf
Alone in the Dark
Chronicles of Riddick:Assault on Dark

So i think that will keep me busy until the big guns arrive in early/middle of 2008 ie. MGS4 and the 2 latest FF games.

Perhaps not the Wii, that's chugging along nicely all on its own, but the PS3 and 360 are directly competing.

The PS3 was a year late to the party with next to nothing to show for the time and the 360 is currently doing a better job filling the PS2's shoes (I can't see that changing in the next 6-12 months either). Mass Effect and Fable 2 (which actually looks very good this time around), Ninja Gaiden 2, plus various other titles that used to be Sony staples - GTA, DMC, VF. This variety you talk of has gone multiplatform. Even Capcom, arguably the most important developer for Sony, seems to be jumping in bed with the Wii rather than support the PS3.

Despite all this, there are PS3 exclusives i'm greatly looking forward too. Team-Ico are awesome, MGS4 will likely be great, Little Big Planet, Time Crysis 4 etc etc. Things will pick up, I just can't see the PS3 delivering in the same way the PS2 did.

Other than those ;)

I actually enjoyed Heavenly Sword a great deal while it lasted, despite a few less than stellar sections. Great rental game.

Really?

God of War 1 and 2
DMC 1 and 3
Ninja Gaiden Black and Sigma

well ive played Devil May Cry series and a demo of Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

Combat of both of these very similar to each other i thought. But Heavenly Sword was more.....artisitic and fluid in the combat i thought. Basically the word im looking for is: Choreography: Heavenly Sword HAS IT IN BUCKETLOADS. Its like a film where you play the lead part.

Im not saying Ninja Gaiden or DMC isnt good but i didnt feel that it flowed as well as Heavenly Sword (ie the chains and combos and moves)

And for these type of games its all about the combat isnt it? ;)

Actually Heavenly Sword somehow feels more than just a game lol.

DMC and Ninja Gaiden FEEL like you're playing a game.

Heavenly Sword FEELS like you're part of a cinematic experience and you're the star in the movie-game lol.

I know what you mean, but your saying it wrong.

The reason Heavely Sword feels more fluid and like your part of a film is because much like God of War the combat is extremely forgiving. You can literally button mash your way through provided you get the stances right.

DMC and expecially Ninja Gaiden are more unforgiving I still found DMC 1 pretty easy but Ninja Gaiden forces you to learn the combat, learn the movesm and ultimately employ them throughout your time playing the game progressively demanding more and more from the player, hence it feels more like a game.

I still peg Heavenly Sword a 6-7 though, AI is zonal relying on trigger points and dreadful, the combat is very contrived and derivative, and ultimately its too short, and playing as kai only served to make me want to kill her, and QTE only worked in Shenmue :D. (BTW BRING ME SHENMUE 3)

I'm a firm believer in "short games are fine as long as its they are brilliant 6 hours" but Heavenly Sword wasn't for me.

Anyway enough debating Heavenly Sword. Drakes looks awful: Go!

Hardly realistic.

Why dont you tell that to someone who likes to play Mario galaxy, Final Fantasy and Singstar and doesnt care for the games you listed? They wont care. They wont factor360 in their choices.

Not everyone is going to like the 360. The fact they have to pay for LIVE. The fact it lacks many games and is weak on genres strong on the other systems. Its target audience is quite narrow and fits many people like us but most actually play outside of what 360 is popular for. Look at the variety of popular games on PS2. They arent 90% shooters and racers. 360's weakness is its narrow focus.

Resistance and Motorstorm are both 2 million sellers. You could argue they would be forgotten but they are now major franchises that came out at launch clearly peopel saying that the Ps3 has nothing to show in games are very wrong. Many multiplatforms games do well on PS3 despite the smaller userbase. Clearly its targeting different gamers to the 360 who are more shooter focused for example.

how are you measuring weakness? based on the 360's success?

yet both are of the same genre and target audience that you are slamming the 360 for. ironic?
