At the fulcrum of humdrum
Saw a car last night that I couldn't identify, despite being pretty familiar with the latest exotica [thanks to you guys, Top Gear etc].

Here's as much as I can remember: silver 2 [or 2+2] seater hard top, low, wide and rounded modern styling like a Porsche, big bodykit on, large rear spoiler [bigger than a 911 GT3 RS], had hips like a Cayman with black vents on the rear arch fronts [more on the tops of the arches than the bottom], fairly plain bonnet [no big scoops or grilles].

My first thought is that it was a Cayman with an aftermarket kit on, or perhaps a limited edition, but I know there aren't that many non-standard Caymans out and about yet. I know what the standard Cayman S looks like - I see one frequently in our works car park - unless the bodykit threw me completely, I don't think it was one. So it was Porsche-esque, but possibly not a Porsche...

Yeah, I know - a vague description, but does this ring a bell with anyone with better knowledge than myself? It was in Sheffield, if that may help - someone local might know the car/owner [didn't get a look at the plate either, sorry].

It just bugs me for ages when I see a car I don't recognise. Know what I mean?

[EDIT - just discovered the upcoming Porsche 911 GT2 and the rear arch vents were very much like that. But on one hand, it's not out yet, and on the other hand 911s tend to be instantly recognisable. Oh, and in my defence, it was getting dark, and it was driving past :D]

Also: it wasn't a Bugatti Veyron. ;)

Audi R8 with a bodykit?

Porsche 993 or 996 GT2? The forthcoming GT is the 3rd varient to carry that name.

Also could also be a 959, its extremely rare but there are some over here.

A bloke who comes into my work has got one of them in silver, he replaced a merc SL65 AMG 'Biturbo' with it, he's bored with the R8 now and wants to replace it, can't wait to see his next car, the first i saw of his was a range rover sport, then he got a golf R32, then a porsche carerra 4 i think, then the merc SL65 AMG then the audi, he owns the empire nightclub in middlesbrough and throws money around for fun.

Could be a Carrera GT as mentioned, I know there is a black one which gets sighted a lot in Leeds I may be going blind but did you mention a colour?

Probably is the one then, I’m known to have colour issues :p

I thought it may be a footballers but looking at the guy he looks slightly too old :o

OP is here, sorry :D

Okay, it wasn't an Audi, kitted or otherwise. I'd have recognised the characteristic LEDs if it was an R8.

I'm not surprised, reading back at my description, that so many of you suggested the Carerra GT; it does seem to fit a number of identifiers. However, it definitely wasn't one. Firstly, the rear spoiler was the width of the car, secondly the roof didn't have the give-away bulges, and thirdly the back was one gentle slope - like 911s, BMW Z4 coupes etc - and not the distinctive 'lumpy' rear of the Carrera GT. As sexy as the GT is, the car I remember had more... cojones. Er, if you see what I mean. More like the brilliant GT1 above in terms of presence, only less, erm, venty :D

It occurred to me that it might have been a Noble - perhaps a new model that I was less familiar with. Two reasons why I discounted this: one, all the Nobles I've seen have been too angular, too wedge-shaped. Secondly, the Noble badge is one long NOBLE; the badge on the front bonnet was more of a small light/chrome rectangle in 'portrait' orientation. Again, this is one of the things that made me think 'not Porsche', as it wasn't a dark shield shape.

I'm coming to the conclusion that it is a very small/niche British manufacturer's car [it definitely wasn't Italian styling, that's for sure], but it wasn't a Noble; nor was it an Ascari. I doubt whether it was a Marcos, as they tend to have great big bonnet scoops and stuff. Also the badge shape doesn't match up.

Inevitably, my memory of the car seems to be slipping a little as time passes, so it's less likely that I'll ever get this one resolved and it'll bug me until either I see it again or it appears on Top Gear. I guess the lesson here is: Always be ready with a camera! I would definitely like to thank all of you for your suggestions, though. :)
