Hey all, our swimming club is going to Hungary for a weeks training camp. We fly out next saturday morning and there were a few of us, not having been there before, wondering what it is like.
The main concern, especially among the girls, is what is the food going to be like, Google seems to think lots of fish soup and goulash, but they were wondering if Hungary has become any more European and wether the food has become a bit more western orientated.

We are going to Hajduszoboszlo, it is about 20 mins from Debrecan and 2 hours from Budapest, if anyone has been anywhere in that area, could you let us know if there are any cool places to visit.

Cheers in advance for any help.

I was in Budapest about 2 months ago, and yes it had the typical Hungarian dishes, but as with most of the old eastern european countries they have a wide selection of western type food. Plus, there is always McDonalds etc.

As above, your not exactly going to be stuck with traditional Hungarian dishes at all if your around Budapest, im not too sure about the rest of the country but I dont imagine it will be much different.

As I said in the OP we are about 2 hours from Budapest up to the north east of the country near the Romanian border. I do not think we will have any time in Budapest or any other large city.
The nearest town is Debrecen, which only has population af around 200,000, so is not that big, although apparently they have the best football team in the country, they have won the national league three seasons running, but they only have a 10,000 seat stadium.

I was in Budapest a couple of months ago and it was absolutley amazing. I love the place, its so great! the dishes are fine, goulash is excellent :)

Hungary > Romania

Romania > Hungary

:D I lived in Romania for a while and loved it, prefered it far more than Hungary, at least Romanian is easier to speak than Hungarian! I could never get my head round it :)

You'll be fine, it depends where you're staying. In a hotel, they will probably cater for a lot of different styles, so you'll be fine. If your cooking yourself, even better! Just buy pasta, meat or pizza etc, they have the same stuff if you go into a supermarket. I personally love buying food that i have no idea what it is, eating it and then finding out what the hell i just ate! Although, hungarian food is nice i found, but dont forget the cheap and awesome Hungarian Wine! :)

Eating local dishes is one of the good things about going abroad. Nothing worse than watching a bunch of tourists in an overseas restaurant asking for pie and chips *sigh*
