PS3 Fan Noise

Not so, everything I have read states the fan should increase when the machine is at load, and decrease when not.

Are there a lot of faulty units then?

Mine too does not cool down when in the XMB, but it has not been a big an issue for me as I thought it would be.
How can I test whether mine is faulty or not if fully working units don't slow down their fans in the xmb? (genuine question)

When reading the threads originally people said to move the PS3 into a clear non heated area, i.e not near your telly on top of other consoles etc and I think the test was to stick in a BR for about 10 mins to make the fan go to level 3, and then stick in the XMB and it would slow down after some time.

I wouldn't class it as a fault, most people have their consoles in warm areas with bad airflow, which skews things, somewhat i.e. near or on to of other consoles, next to LCD tv (LCDS pump out a lot of heat).

I have never had the time or inclination to do a proper test or research this topic fully, although this thread may lead me to do it!

Edit: Just looking at the 360 and ps3 setup threads, you can see most people do not have their consoles in areas that would be cool enough to do a proper test, considering the 360/ps3 get much hotter and need much more free space around them then traditional AV kit, and I daresay some PCs even!

Edit2: I think this is the thread (popping out now so haven't read it yet) if anyone is interested http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=502980

Edit3: I don't want to say anything in my post above is gospel, until I have reviewed the above thread, later.

Mine is in a very well ventilated place. It seems to go down to tier 2 but not 1 so it seems mine is fine.

cheers rp200(0) :)

This is the point I was trying to make.

When my PS3 was under my TV, it did have room to breathe.
At the time, I figured it would be plenty.

The amount of heat that the PS3 puts out though is quite amazing.
If I put my hand under the telly, when the PS3 had been on for a while, it was boiling in there. Slowly cooking my DVD player and PVR ;)
No wonder the fans sped right up.

Out in the open though, you can hardly hear it, and the heat coming out of it feels greatly reduced. The heat was building up under the telly, and wasn't escaping very well. It really was surprising how warm the air was, if I put my hand in the telly stand.

PS. As RP200(0) says, there were/are plenty of threads about the fans spinning down, and I was convinced that I had one of the faulty ones.
Now it has a proper airflow though, it doesn't bother me one way or the other, as it doesn't get loud enough to bother me any more.... and I am one of those people who HATE that fan noise, which is why it wound be up so much before... to the point I didn't wanna use the PS3 if it were gunna whooosh at me the whole time.

I have noticed that when you turn it on, the first x mins are fan free. When level 1 kicks in, it stays on, it certainly never goes back down to fan free, unless I turn off & on the PS3. It never gets to level 3 any more to test that, but I shall pay attention next time it goes to level 2, to see if it drops to level one when left idle in the XMB.

the ps3 has a fan??

[sticks head on top of case]

well you learn something new every day, very quite on mine, had to turn my pc off and shut the windows to hear anything from it.

Brilliant isn't it? Sony are fantastic at making good quality hardware (even if it is pig ugly :p)

That's normal though mate.

Not on mine it isn't. Yes the fan does kick in occasionally, but go back to XMB and let it idle and it goes back to whisper quiet after a while. Mine is just a normal UK 60Gig model with the latest firmware.

I've already been corrected matey :p

I have another question, for those of you that have a unit that reduces its fan speed can you feel the air being emitted from the side (top when its on its side) vents ? On mine you can feel the air being pushed out of the back vents but the side vents you can barely feel it.

Mines as loud as the X word fans just without the high pitch whining.

I think that's what this "level 3" fan noise is?
When it's on a low fan speed, I can only feel air being shifted out the back.

When it was under my telly, and fans making a noise, I could feel it coming out of the side as well.

have you seen the new white ones?

want..want so bad.

didnt realise until a short time ago that the ps3 and its controllers are actually transparent...

i do expect it to get noisier in the future as dust builds on the fan blades but for the moment its pretty much utterly silent, which is nice as it spends 18 hours a day folding.

I prefer the black one myself, I like dark/black hardware. :D
