Yes i know this is early planning but gives a LOT of time for people to book time off and arrange other things around it.
Will bump this regularly ;) to make sure everyone gets to see it.

Edinburgh Meet – 27th-29th June ‘08
This meet will involve alcohol and because of this, the meet will not be open to under 18s, no ifs or buts.
No one will take responsibility for you, no matter what you say your parents say the answer is still no sorry. Fake ID’s are a no no as well, the pubs and clubs in Edinburgh are strict especially on weekends so please don’t try.

Getting to Edinburgh –
Driving: It is quite expensive to park in the Burgh (read far too much) some hotels do have parking available there are also a lot of areas that are permit holders only. I will have a look for more long term parking options. As for driving in the city centre, I personally wouldn’t recommend it. Public transport is very good here.

Flying: There are plenty of flights into the Airport every day from all over the county. There is an airport bus £5 return and goes into the city centre. Shuttle bus (door-to-door shared ride) is £8 each way. Taxi approx £15-20.

Train: There are two main train stations in Edinburgh, Haymarket (which is just outside the main area but close to a lot of hotels and the travel inn and Waverley the main station right in the city centre.

Bus: For those a bit more local the bus station is right in the city centre in St Andrews Square. Buses run very regularly but reduced service on Sundays.

Where to stay –
Edinburgh is full of hotels and B&Bs I can only make a few suggestions.
There is a Travel Inn near Haymarket Station in Edinburgh £69 per night.
Gilmore place is heaving with B&Bs of varying standards.
If anyone is interested Pollack Halls (student accommodation) can also be used.
Most people like to stay around the same area so let people know where you are and if you have found anything/used anywhere before and would recommend it, having never stayed in a hotel in my home city I’m a bit useless for this part.

The plan –
Friday:
Day: People arrive, hoping most people will have arrived and gotten their bearings in time to meet up at the information kiosk between 2:30pm and 3pm. It is shown here as it is very central and allows people who have never been to Edinburgh before to find the group rather than naming a pub.
We will have a wander around Edinburgh and take in the sites.
People go back to their abodes to get ready for food and the night to come.

Night: Depending on what people would like to do for food I would probably suggest the Omni centre where there are plenty of choices, from Frankie and Bennies to all you can eat Chinese with a bit of Spanish tapas thrown in.
For those that arrive later this would be a good place to meet us. We will probably be here around 7:30pm.
After this I think George Street and Rose Street would be the best first locations, Standing Order on George Street is a good starting place then for those that want to there are a number of pubs and clubs in the surrounding areas.

Saturday:
Day: Meet up in the city center at the kiosk again, people can do some shopping and generally explore. If enough people want i will organise bowling or some other activity. Alternative is to find a nice spot and enjoy the city and have a quiet drink and some lunch. Edinburgh is lucky enough to contain both the Princes Street Gardens and the Meadows, large grassy areas in the center of town and if it is nice (heres hoping that it will be) then lazing around there is a great activity, will also allow you to get to know your fellow attendees. Another thing being mentioned is climbing Aurthurs Seat, nice walk up and awesome views.

Night: For food I’ll let you all fend for yourselves, Edinburgh is heaving with places to eat. From the bog standard fast food to silver service, I’m sure you can work something out with your fellow meet people. I’ll give you a hand and show you this -

After eating we will all meet at the Tron Kirk (map) and make our way to Finnegan's Wake and Irish themed bar one of my favourite haunts it is always very busy but huge fun with live music and a great atmosphere, then onto Bar Kohl the vodka bar with a huge chalkboard menu containing everything from cola cube to pepper flavoured vodka, they do serve normal drinks too. As Bar Kohl is a little expensive for some pockets we will move on again to Frankenstein’s another themed bar. Then see where the night takes us.

Sunday
Day: If people want they can have a final meander around Edinburgh before leaving do some shopping and walk off their hangover. This also helps people who need to get buses to the airport/get the train/bus to get home as they are all central.

Who is coming then?

I've never been to Scotland. It'd love to come and meet some more fellow OcUK'ers. June '08 should be plenty of notice and by then I should be able to fly myself there :D.

Maybe pile please for now :).

Edit: Hate shopping though. Perhaps some like minded people can come and do something more adventurous (other than drinking!) during the day.

I won't be shopping, there is plenty of other things to do though including climbing Arthurs Seat, the hooge hill in Edinburgh. :)

Also, what airlines fly from London to Edinburgh? :)

Adz airways, license + plane + weather permitting ;).

Tickets are free but there's no hostess service. In flight entertainment is my usual brand of inane banter :D.

I'm in, but ill be working during the day, i stay 20 minutes away tho :D Ill be able to come out on the friday & saturday nights I hope, I have some place i can stay :D

It's going to be cheaper for me to get to this meet via plane then it is to the Newcastle or Alton Towers one :p (Yes, I'm going to try and go to all three :D)

I've only ever been to one meet which was the Liverpool one, but it's more of a chance to meet other OcUK'ers more than going to a certain destination because of it's reputation for night life.

As long as there is a certain place that the organiser thinks would be suitable and not too out of tastes for the majority, then any place will do.

Edinburgh is good, not amazing, but it is still a good night out. I go to Heriot Watt uni, which is just outside the town.

Maybe i'm bias but i kind of like it here, no problem with Glasgow but i'm not going to organise a meet in a city i don't know very well am i?
This is the last post on the subject any more Glasgow>Edinburgh posts i will ask to be removed.
