Reasons why not to buy cheapo psus

Liked that, just shows how far the enthusiast market has moved on, back in 2000 you had a argument on your hands to justify a PSU past the one that came with your case.

I agree a build has to have good components on it - no excuses. For me this also applies to moniters, keyboards and mice. So many of my friends insist on building (what would be today) C2D 8800GTX etc. boxes while interacting with it using a £5 mouse/keyboard combo and a £50 monitor. It just doesn't make sense..

This bit says it all really (this was made in coment on the Hiper, in comment on the poor quality DC output):

"This unit would still be functioning at 348w and test good using a multimeter but users would have no idea what was going on with the DC Output quality. This kind of failure is possibly worse than a simple overload and shutdown that is easily identified as if the system continued running properly there would be long term damage that would be hard to troubleshoot. The examination of the quality of DC output is of the utmost importance when evaluating a power supply."

Really bad, as it won't show up with a simple multi-meter test, but can damage your other hardware causing "damage that would be hard to troubleshoot." Just re-iterates that it is severerly unwise to buy an uber rig with uber hardware and then skimp on the PSU... might just cause that uber rig to to become an uber-brick...

My brother is in the electronics industry, the company buys transformers for switch boards from China. 85% failure rate, mostly with large capacity capicators soldered incorrect phase...

Aye was surprised about the Hiper, wonder if this has any relation to the type R 580s' issues?

Soem say not, however, I have a 580 here that has died one me... It kind of half works now in that it switches on then off then on and so on 2 or 3 times a second, so its good as a slow strobe but nothing more.

I will say though that I have had it a couple of years running 6 SCSI HDs and 4 DVDRW Drives and its been flawless in that time.

On another note, I have a QTEC 450 here that I am still running and its been flawless.

I had it in my XP2200 when the XP2200 was a great CPU, it then went to my Barton2500@3200... I then sold it off to a mate who had it in his P4/2.6 and then about a year later he upped his PC and gave me his P4 in part payment for his new one and of course by this time, I decided the PSU had run more than what can be expected from it, so, I threw it into my sons PC to live the rest of its life out... Its still going strong... Very strong and stable too!

I opened it up about 8 months or so ago and cleaned out the dust, gave it a couple of new fans, checked out such things like the soldering etc and there was a few dry joints, but nothing that was giving the PSU any problems, and its back to perfect again.

At this time, its running a Venice 3500 @ 2500 and 2x1GB in an MSI Neo2 and a BFG 6800GT with a 40GB and an 80GB with a single DVDROM...

Not at all bad and it must be over 5 years old.

I also have a 550w QTec thats doing fine too, but thats been in the wifes PC so its had very little use and no loading at all.

---

Just in case of any confusion, there is no way I would use the QTecs in my own main PCs - they are happily using OCZ in this one and a Tagan in my Game PC in the attic.

That was a good read :)

I have an EZcool 550w PSU and for just over 18 months it has had the amps roasted on it. Overclocking CPU's, GFX and Mobo's it has held its own and has never failed on me.

Its now sat in the wifes case and quite happily runs along all day long.

I have the Hiper 580w Type-M now and god only knows what i will do to the PSU if it blows like the others have on here.

I suppose its luck of the draw with many cheap PSU's.
