Mass Effect Review 9.75

this and Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey is going to keep me busy!

Same here :D
Eternal Sonata comes out on my payday and so does Mass Effect. Even better, I've managed to be rotaed in for a 3 day weekend when Mass Effect comes out.

1 month ago, people were giving Bioshock 9.5/10 10/10 scores and shouting "game of the year", "game of the decade" tags around. Don;t see anyone playing it on the 360 no more. (Note even in thee top 10 played titles on majornelson.com anymore)

I am reserving judgement as there seems to be a lot of unreasonably high scores being thrown around willy nilly for 360 games atm.

You have just contradicted yourself there, the reason its not in the top ten is because there is so many good games out. 2007 has been a fantastic year for the Xbox 360 and October and November still have a lot to give!

I think it's down to the lack of MP, once you've finished the SP their isn't really any reason to go back to it?

Err...how have I contradicted myself? If Bioshock has the highest score and best reviews (bar Halo 3), and people are playing other lower scored games in preference to it, then its score etc were not a true reflection of the game, is what I meant. Hence my cynicism about the Mass Effect score.

If it was that great and 1 month later it is not being played as much as 6 month old games, then it got the wrong score. Simple.

I know, I was merely saying its review scores may have been exaggerated, hence my reservations about Mass Effects score, nothing more.

That's probably because everyone who wanted to get it already has done, and as it's single player only they've already gone through it and finished it. Without MP it has a limited life span, but that doesn't take away from the fact it's the best single player experience I've had in probably 2 years or so.

ooo i haven't read much about this game, cos i was caught up in the halo3 extravaganza, but will definitely be getting this game, haven't played a decent rpg on the 360 yet.

blue dragon didn't really look like it was that good.

Is Mass effect coming out on pc at any stage? No problem with getting it for the 360,but if a pc version is in the works i'll probably wait for that.

I agree, it's one release week after another with must have titles. With still plenty more to come.

November and December has a huge list of games that I would definately take a look at.

Though I do think Bioshock has a vastly over rated score. As RP said no one plays it now and that lastability shouldve been factored into the review. For my money it should've scored around 8/8.5 like the darkness.

Sorry but I disagree with that, just because a game hasnt scored AAA doesnt mean its a rubbish game, there are plenty of 8's and 7's games that are still classed as good games, must have games in some cases.

Also the way you speak about bioshock, may I ask if you have played it?

It's a single player story and as such will most likely be played the once or twice then maybe just returned to once a year.

Just because people aren't playing Half Life 2, System Shock 2 or KOTOR much any more doesn't make them bad games.

I see you're one of the mass conspiracy theorists who believes all the gaming press are engaged in a global united strategy to give 360 games higher marks then PS3 ones. Ockhams razor: What's more likely? This conspiracy, or that the 360 has genuine AA games from the makers of previous AA titles (Irrational/Bioware/Bungie/Bizarre) and Lair really does suck.

Bioware are a talented bunch with a very impressive rpg pedigree. Baldurs Gate was a what every rpg fan wanted when it came out; a genuinely monumental title. KOTOR was arguable one of the best previous generation titles so when they say Mass Effect is their best game yet and the gaming press are agreeing I think it's ok to start getting excited about it.

hm why do they keep making games shorter and shorter. RPG should not be completable easily within 20 hours.

minish cap shouldnt be completeable in like 12 hours. these dev's are really taking the mick these days with the amount of effort they put into the longevity of the games.

I've read a different interview with the developers and they claim it's 20-30 hours for the main story with another 20-30 hours for all the side quests.

50 to 60 hours is pretty good imo.

If its a trilogy that'll be three nicely sized chunks. It'll also make development easier to manage for them and theyll be able to improve the second and third installments in line with any shortcomings of the first. Also whats the betting that DVD is crammed full with the resources required to get just that length of playtime in ?
