A BMW dealer oil and brake fluid change on a 320D e46?
Because I nearly choked on my complimentry coffee when I saw the bill.

£200 and I'd be 'happy' (as happy as you can be) but I would suggest they billed you £250-£270.

Moral of story: Supply own oil, knocks about £40 off the bill.

Are the replies in this thread a joke??

I can buy Ford spec mobil oil and a fitler for £22

Thats really very good, but you have a Ford and the OP does not.

Whilst I am the first to acknowledge that BMW pricing is hefty, even from the cheapest of suppliers the oil used is approximately £10-£15 a litre, and the cars take up to 6.5 litres of it. The dealer labour right is usually £80+ an hour as well, and an oil service includes a Microfilter change and various safetychecks as well, the filters being £25 in parts for an E46.

So really, how much it costs you to DIY an oil change on a Focus has no real bearing on how much a main dealer oil service costs for a BMW 3 Series.

FWIW I got my last Oil Service down to £135, although they supplied the oil. Had an Inspection 1 inc loan car for £200, which I suspect is less than the OP paid for his.

Not heard of BMW running costs then I take it?

Nope, didnt relise they where so bad !

but my mate just payed £80 at work for 5 minutes work, PCM update on his Focus TDCi, although I guess it does take a lot of skill to re-program a ECU

why would you pay to get your oil changed, do it yourself..

Becuase you destroy the residual value of your car and make it very hard to resell. This is fine when your car is worth a grand - oil in the Mondeo is DIY done - but not when its worth more. He hasn't told us how old his 320d is but it could be worth anything up to £25,000. You dont DIY service a car like that.

Oil Service is a tad misleading becuase it isn't simply an oil and filter change.

meh, I buy my own oil and filter and take it to the local indy, they only ask for £10. It's worth £10 to keep my hands clean and dispose of the oil:p

Exactly, If i had a Lambo Id still do the 5k service my self, Although I think thats just the tight northener in me.. :D

No you wouldn't. You think you would, but once you find yourself in the positioning to be spending £100k on cars you won't be scrabbling around it underneath changing oil and killing its residual value.
